{"id":12,"date":"2007-10-06T20:32:11","date_gmt":"2007-10-06T20:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=12"},"modified":"2007-10-07T16:28:11","modified_gmt":"2007-10-07T16:28:11","slug":"the-2007-cabernet-sauvignon-blind-tasting-results-are-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=12","title":{"rendered":"The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Blind Tasting Results Are In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Sebastiani%202004%20Alexander%20Valley%20Cabernet.gif\" alt=\"Sebastiani 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet\" height=\"159\" style=\"width: 160px; height: 159px\" title=\"Sebastiani 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Our winner for the second consecutive year was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2797\" title=\"Sebastiani 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet\">2004 Sebastiani &#8220;Alexander Valley&#8221; $32 Cabernet<\/a><\/strong>!<span>   <\/span>Last year the 2003 won this event.<span>   <\/span>Congrats go out to the winemaker, Mark Lyon, on his second consecutive victory.<span>   <\/span>This wine finished with a very impressive score of 91.56.<span>   <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">We tried 21 Cabernets in all.<span>   <\/span>We recommended  three Cabs as <strong>&#8220;Very Good +&#8221;<\/strong> including the Sebastiani.<span>    Seven<\/span> additional Cabs were also recommended as &#8220;<strong>Very Good<\/strong>&#8220;.<span>   <\/span>So  ten out of out of 21made the cut.  <span>  Four<\/span> Cabs qualified as Good, but we only recommend <strong>&#8220;Very Good&#8221;<\/strong> wines.  <span>  Seven<\/span> other wines &#8220;failed&#8221; to qualify as Good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Merriam%202004%20Block%2021%20Cabernet%20Sauvignon.gif\" alt=\"Merriam 2004 Block 21 Cabernet\" height=\"269\" style=\"width: 160px; height: 269px\" title=\"Merriam 2004 Block 21 Cabernet\" \/>In second place with a score of 90.38 was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2832\" title=\"Merriam 2004 Block 21 Cabernet Sauvignon\"><strong>2004 Merriam &#8220;Block 21&#8221; $35<\/strong> <\/a>from Dry Creek.The panel felt this was a terrific porterhouse steak wine.<span>   <\/span>This wine is also cellar worthy.<span>   <\/span>It will not be released until February 2008, so you have an opportunity to get in line to buy it.<span>   <\/span>In third place was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2798\" title=\"Bravante 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet\">Bravante 2003 &#8220;Howell Mountain&#8221; $34 Cabernet<\/a><\/strong>.<span>   <\/span>This terrific wine finished with a score of 90.13. <span>  <\/span>This small winery has been making some  very good  wine lately.<span>   <\/span>You should also check  out their red blend, the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2621\" title=\"2004 Bravante Trio\">&#8220;2004 Trio&#8221;.<\/a><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The rest of the wines were all &#8220;<strong>Very Good<\/strong>&#8221; and  definitely recommended.<span>   <\/span>These wines stood out as distinctively better than their competition.   <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"97\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Blackstone%202005%20Cab.gif\" alt=\"Blacestone 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon\" height=\"350\" style=\"width: 97px; height: 350px\" title=\"Blacestone 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon\" \/>The best value wine came in  fourth place.<span>   <\/span>This value wine was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=1054\" title=\"Blackstone 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon\">2005 Blackstone California $9<\/a><\/strong>.<span>   <\/span>This wine is a  great bargain.<span>   <\/span>We added it to our practical party case on the website and you should stock up with some if you are having some big holiday parties.<span>   <\/span>Another fine value was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2831\" title=\"2004 Dry Creek Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon\"><strong>2004 Dry Creek Vineyards Cabernet for $22.<\/strong><\/a><span>   <\/span>This wine has some complexity and is another good value.   It would pair nicely with grilled steak.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Also in the money were  two wines from the Finger Lakes.<span>   <\/span>Our recent trip out there proved that 2005 was a really nice year for red wines from that region.<span>   <\/span>Under the foil this proved to be true  again.<span>   <\/span>Standing Stone submitted a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2835\" title=\"Standing Stone 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon\"><strong>2005 Reserve Cabernet $28 <\/strong><\/a>that finished in  fifth place with a score of 88.31 and  the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2836\" title=\"Standing Stone 2005 Pinnacle\">Standing Stone 2005 &#8220;Pinnacle&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> $21 which is a Cab based red blend wine that finished in 10th place.<span>   <\/span>Like the Merriam, these wines were sneak peaks and will be released this winter.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Other wines that made the cut were as follows:<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">#7 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2834\" title=\"2004 Raymond Reserve Cabernet\">Raymond &#8220;Reserve&#8221; 2004<\/a>  <\/strong>(Napa Valley, CA) $35 (87.25)<\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">#8 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2837\" title=\"2003 Earthquake Cabernet Sauvignon\"><strong>Michael &amp; David 2003 &#8220;Earthquake&#8221;<\/strong> <\/a>(Lodi, CA) $28 (87.63)<\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">#9 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=2833http:\/\/\" title=\"Marquee 2003 Signature Cabernet\"><strong>Marquee 2003 &#8220;Signature&#8221; <\/strong><\/a>(Langhorne Creek, Aust) $20 (87.63)<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">As you can see most of the best Cabernets cost over $20.<span>   <\/span>The Blackstone was the exception.<span>   <\/span>The  four wines that qualified as <strong>Good<\/strong> were in the $8 to $15 range.<span>   I<\/span>f you are looking for a &#8220;<strong>Very Good<\/strong>&#8221; Cabernet it appears that you might have to spend more than $20 to reach this goal.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Next month we cover &#8220;<strong>Miscellaneous White<\/strong>&#8221; wines and it should be real fun.<span>   <\/span>I look forward to sharing the results with you.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our winner for the second consecutive year was the 2004 Sebastiani &#8220;Alexander Valley&#8221; $32 Cabernet!
