{"id":2379,"date":"2024-09-02T19:14:40","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T19:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=2379"},"modified":"2024-09-02T19:19:54","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T19:19:54","slug":"winemaker-interview-series-joel-peterson-of-once-future-july-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=2379","title":{"rendered":"Winemaker Interview Series &#8211; Joel Peterson of Once &#038; Future \u2013 July 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Joel-Peterson-Once-and-Future-Winemaker-Blog.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1935\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Joel-Peterson-Once-and-Future-Winemaker-Blog-155x300.gif\" alt=\"Joel Peterson\" width=\"155\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, we had the opportunity to once again interview<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onceandfuturewine.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Joel Peterson<\/strong><\/a>.<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Joel is the owner and winemaker for<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onceandfuturewine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Once &amp; Future Winery<\/a>.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">We covered seven new-release 2022 vintage single vineyard Zinfandels and one Petite Sirah with Joel during our interview.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=2137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Our previous interview with Joel<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">was in <strong>June of 2023<\/strong>. We then covered eight 2021 vintage Zins and an impressive 2020 Red Blend. Check out what we learned from Joel this time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before we get to the wines, I thought I would share some tidbits Joel shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I told Joel that I thought the 2022 Mataro was perhaps the best rendition of that wine that I could remember.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joel advised that it was a small crop with good concentration and depth of flavors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He also mentioned that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/heritageradionetwork.org\/episode\/tegan-passalacqua-head-winemaker-and-vineyard-manager-turley-wine-cellars-and-proprietor-sandlands-wines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tegan<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">took over the Oakley lease and is now farming it, which also helps.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I also observed that Joel was using lighter bottles and no capsules. We all agreed that this was better on many fronts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Once-and-Future-2022-Bedrock-Vineyard-Zinfandel.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Once-and-Future-2022-Bedrock-Vineyard-Zinfandel-141x300.gif\" alt=\"Once &amp; Future 2022 Bedrock Zin label\" width=\"141\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I also asked Joel what was the meaning of the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">keyhole in the leaf <\/span>on his logo<\/strong>? Joel told us, it was symbolizing unlocking the secrets of the vine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 2022 vintage is considered by most to be a very difficult vintage. Joel avoided most of the problems because he picked before the extreme heat, so that provided a very good result for him.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joel describes 2023 as a fabulous vintage, so we are really looking forward to covering those wines!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He advised that the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/historicvineyardsociety.org\/vineyard\/belloni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Belloni Vineyard<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Zinfandel is returning to the lineup in 2023. I can&#8217;t wait!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He also advised that the 2023 Dickerson Zin will be its last vintage from Once &amp; Future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/historicvineyardsociety.org\/vineyard\/old-hill-ranch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Old Hill Ranch<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">has one of the longest histories \u2013 Joel mentioned that Merry Edwards made a Zin from there in 1978 for Mt. Eden Vineyards.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buckzin.com\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Their website<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">said it sold for $8.50. Joel started buying the vineyards\u00a0 grapes in 1984.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Of all of Joel\u2019s sites, he says that the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/historicvineyardsociety.org\/vineyard\/bacigalupi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bacigalupi Vineyard<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">is the coolest site with the fewest sun hours, so it is late ripening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/historicvineyardsociety.org\/vineyard\/palisades-vineyard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palisades Vineyard<\/a> <\/strong>Petite Sirah<span style=\"color: #000000;\">: Joel tends to pick earlier than others from this site, which helps define his style of this wine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We asked Joel about whole cluster crushing for Zin. Joel felt that Zin does not generally benefit from whole cluster.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is a summary of the wine offerings from Once &amp; Future that we covered with Joel.
