Roman\">The\u00c2\u00a0KensWineGuide.com Tasting Panel blindly tasted 17 distinctive Pinot Noirs.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Most of the major Pinot producing regions were represented.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The only exception was there were no submissions from <st1:state><st1:place>Oregon<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Pinot Noir is a funny grape.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It&apos;s difficult to grow and difficult to make.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is also made in \u201cmany\u201d\u009d different styles &#8211; perhaps\u00c2\u00a0that is due to\u00c2\u00a0the varied growing regions and terroirs or just the\u00c2\u00a0grape&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0temperament.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Like the grape, it seems our Tasting Panel is equally finicky.\u00c2\u00a0The Tasting Panel\u00c2\u00a0frequently\u00c2\u00a0has varying opinions about the wines and their styles when discussing Pinot Noir &#8211; more than any other grape it seems.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>There certainly was a lack of consensus most of the time that evening.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>However, there was one wine that did capture everyone&apos;s attention.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Bianchi%202005%20Garey%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Bianchi 2005 PN Garey Vineyard\" height=\"295\" \/><span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><strong>It also won by a landslide, garnering an\u00c2\u00a0Excellent score of 93.375<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Which Pinot garnered such support?<span><strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span>It was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3402\" title=\"Bianchi 2005 Pinot Noir Garey Vineyard\"><strong>2005 Bianchi \u201cSignature Selection\u201d\u009d $25 from the Garey Vineyard<\/strong><\/a> in the Santa Maria Valley of California.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Why did this Pinot stand out so much?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I think the consensus was that it had something for everyone and a lot of those somethings.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was smooth as silk and that was very appealing.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It had a very inviting spicy strawberry bouquet.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was complex and had delicious lush cherry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 It had soft tannins that just ran on and on.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was just special.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was the kind of wine that made you yearn for more.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately for us, the bottle was empty very quickly.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine&apos;s scores varied between 96 as the highest score and 89 as the lowest score.<span>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Eight<\/span> other panelists scored it between 94 and 91.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was impressive!<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">On the whole, we recommended 13 of 17 of the Pinots.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>However, the remaining 12 recommended wines all scored <strong>Very Good<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>None of these submissions\u00c2\u00a0received consistently high scores\u00c2\u00a0from the panel judges needed to\u00c2\u00a0achieve the Very Good+ level or\u00c2\u00a0to reach the\u00c2\u00a0Excellent status that the Bianchi achieved.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 W<\/span>hich wines were the best of the rest we tried?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" width=\"160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Donum%202005%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Donum 2005 Pinot Noir\" height=\"199\" \/><\/span>Our second place finisher was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3407\" title=\"Donum 2005 Pinot Noir\">2005 Donum Estate $65<\/a><\/strong> from <st1:place><st1:city>Carneros<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine scored an 88.31.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Donum is the high end bottling from the folks who make Robert Stemmler wines.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They are a very well known specialty Pinot producer.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They consistently perform very well and this offering reflects that.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was very smooth and well balanced with spicy plum like flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Our third place finisher was from Talley Vineyards.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Talley is another premier Pinot producer.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They are based in the <st1:city><st1:place>Arroyo Grande Valley of California.<\/st1:place><\/st1:city><span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This year they submitted their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3408\" title=\"Talley 2005 Stone Corral Pinot Noir\"><strong>2005 Pinot from the \u201cStone Corral Vineyard\u201d\u009d $50<\/strong><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0from the <st1:place><st1:placename>Edna<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename>Valley<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This Pinot scored an 88.125.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was well balanced, rich, and concentrated.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It finished with soft tannins that made it food friendly and would pair it perfectly with a pork tenderloin with a brown sage sauce.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Cima%20Collina%202005%20Chula%20Vina%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Cima Collina 2005 Pinot Noir Chula Vina\" height=\"191\" \/>Our 4<sup>th<\/sup> place finisher was a newcomer for us.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was from <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3410\" title=\"Cima Colina 2005 Chula Vina Pinot\">Cima Collina in <st1:city><st1:place>Monterey<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Their 2005 \u201cChula Vina\u201d\u009d Pinot Noir $20<\/a><\/strong> was very well received and scored very consistently from all the panel members.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Their final score was 88.125 as well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This medium bodied wine was well balanced and driven by its strawberry like flavors with a touch of spicy raspberry as well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was tasty and appealing.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>In 5<sup>th<\/sup> place was the always Very Good <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3409\" title=\"Goldeneye 2005 Pinot Noir\">2005 Goldeneye $55<\/a><\/strong> from <st1:place><st1:city>Anderson Valley<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This youthful wine scored an 88.07.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It displays spicy black cherry flavors\u00c2\u00a0with hints of oak.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine&#8217;s acidity held it back for a few panelists, but on the whole it was very well liked.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" width=\"169\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Migration%202006%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Goldeneye 2006 Migration Pinot Noit\" height=\"200\" \/><\/span>Our 6<sup>th<\/sup> place finisher was <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3415\" title=\"Migration 2006 Pinot Noir\">Goldeneye&apos;s sister wine the 2006 \u201cMigration<\/a>.\u201d\u009d <\/strong>This wine also hails from <st1:place><st1:placename>Anderson<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Valley<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> in CA.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine scored an even 88.0 from the panel. <span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Given the $32 retail price it&apos;s a better deal than the Goldeneye right now.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was smooth, well balanced, and highlighted by its sweet cherry like flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/White%20Horse%202006%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Wild Horse 2006 Pinot Noir\" height=\"200\" \/><\/span>Another good value wine was 7<sup>th<\/sup> place finisher.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3439\" title=\"Wild Horse 2006 Pinot Noir\"><strong>2006 Wild Horse Pinot $25<\/strong><\/a> from <st1:state><st1:place>California<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>&apos;s <st1:place><st1:placename>Central<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Coast<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was also very appealing to the panel as they scored it an 88.0.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was\u00c2\u00a0straight forward, but it was smooth, soft, well balanced and had very tasty cherry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 It was a <\/span>very food friendly option to consider with Chicken Parmagianna.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The\u00c2\u00a0other recommended Pinots were as follows:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">#8 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3411\" title=\"Marimar 2005 Pinot Noir Dona Margarita\">2005 Marimar \u201cDona Margarita Vineyard\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0(<st1:place><st1:city>Sonoma Coast<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $45 (87.875)<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">#9 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3404\" title=\"Gundlach Bundschu 2005 Pinot Noir Rhinefarm\">2005 Gundlach Bundschu \u201d\u009dRhinefarm\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> (<st1:place><st1:city>Sonoma Valley<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $38 target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3416\" title=\"Marimar Estate 2005 Pinot Noir Don Miquel\"><strong>2005 Marimar Estate\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Don Miquel Vineyard&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> (Russian River Valley, CA) $42 (87.19)<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Kenneth%20Volk%202005%20Santa%20Barbara%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Kenneth Volk Vineyards 2005 Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County\" height=\"133\" \/>We also had some\u00c2\u00a0late submissions arrive, which we tried with a smaller Tasting Panel later in the week.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The clear cut winners from those submissions were\u00c2\u00a0the two Pinots submitted by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3437\" title=\"Kenneth Volk Vineyards 2005 Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County\"><strong>Ken Volk Vineyards.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The 2005 <st1:place><st1:placename>&#8220;Santa Barbara<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>County&#8221;<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place><\/strong><\/a> $24 offering was our favorite garnering a <strong>Very Good+<\/strong> score from our mini Tasting Panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored this wine a 90.0.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We also liked his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3438\" title=\"Kenneth Volk 2005 Pinot Noir Sierra Madre\"><strong>2005 \u201cSierra Madre\u201d\u009d offering $36<\/strong><\/a>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored this wine an 88.0 Very Good.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I also tried the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3462\" title=\"Williams Selyem 2006 Russian River Pinot Noir\">2005 William Seylem Pinot<\/a><\/strong> from <st1:place><st1:placename>Russian<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>River<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype>Valley<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> $60.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was also Very Good and easy going.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This Pinot will appeal to those who like restraint in their Pinots.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I called it a &#8220;white wine drinkers&#8221; Pinot.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Michel%20Picard%202005%20Le%20Charmois%20Pinot%20Noir.gif\" alt=\"Michel Picard 2005 Pinot Noir St. Aubin Le Charmois\" height=\"400\" \/>Finally, there is\u00c2\u00a0two\u00c2\u00a0Pinot&#8217;s that stood out to me at this years NYC Wine Expo.\u00c2\u00a0 The first is a fine example of the excellent 2005 vintage in Burgundy.\u00c2\u00a0 It was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3383\" title=\"Michel Picard 2005 Pinot Noir St. Aubin 1er Cru Le Charmois\"><strong>2005 Michel Picard Pinot Noir &#8220;St. Aubin 1er Cru Le Charmois&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I rated this wine a Very Good+.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The other wine was the wonderful <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3386\" title=\"Laetitia 2006 Pinot Noir Les Galets\">2006 Laetitia Winery &#8220;Les Galets&#8221; Pinot Noir<\/a><\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This wines was smooth as silk, well balanced, and has wonderful spicy strawberry flavors.\u00c2\u00a0This beauty will pair perfectly with grilled salmon drizzled with a lemon butter sauce.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">In summary, we found most of the Pinots submitted and reviewed to be very satisfying and Very Good.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We found one outstanding wine that we all agreed was the unanimous winner.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Pinot is a funny grape that makes so many different styles of wine so it shouldn&apos;t surprise me or
