On the white side, we covered three 2021 Chardonnays. On the red side, we covered three 2021 and three 2022 Pinot Noirs. In this post you will learn more about Geoff, Marla, Kale, Domaine de la Riviere, and all of these terrific wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before we get to the wines, I thought I would share some tidbits Geoff and Kale shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Geoff and Marla are originally from New York. They worked in New York for 25 years. Both worked in client facing jobs and they did a lot of entertaining of clients.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marla worked at the Fairmont in New York.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Geoff worked for Deutsche Bank in real estate. He was a people connector.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their wine journey started with an inexpensive Chenin Blanc while skiing in the Berkshires.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2001 one of Geoff&#8217;s clients bought the Sonoma Mission Inn.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For 9-10 years they visited and were based out of this location for wine exploration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2010, they wanted a summer home. So, they bought a 22-acre ranch. It also has 11 acres already planted to Pinot Noir.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was a couple years before they actually built their home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They had contracts Paul Hobbs, Kosta Browne, Gary Farrell, and Dave Phinney&#8217;s (Pinot Program)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The problem was the vineyard had red blotch and needed to be replanted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2016 they planted 3 acres, now called \u201cHeritage Block.\u201d It came online in 2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2018 they planted 8 acres, now called \u201cRed Barn Block.\u201d It came online in 2021.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They hand planted over 15,000 plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2017 was their first vintage. They made 700 cases.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They wanted to make wines in a Burgundian style.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They wanted all their wines to originate from the Middle Reach area of the Russian River Valley.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They had to contract fruit during the replant. Their two sources were the Star Ridge Vineyard which was a Gary Farrell Estate Vineyard and the other was El Diablo Vineyard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Who are some of the other Wineries and Vineyards in the Middle Reach?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rochioli<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Williams Selyem<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gary Farrell<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Arista<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Joseph Swan<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bacigalupi<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ritchie Vineyard<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flora Marie Vineyard<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">El Diablo<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Currently they make 1,200 cases and feel that it is their ideal size.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2024 and going forward all of their Pinot Noir will be &#8220;Estate&#8221; fruit.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They sell a small portion of their grapes to Kale&#8217;s clients.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All the Chardonnay is still contracted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Walsh Vineyard Management (Matt Rielly) manages all of their vineyards for them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All the Domaine de la Riviere wines are made at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandcrucustomcrush.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Grand Cru Custom Crush<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Kale-Anderson-Domaine-de-la-Riviere-Winemaker.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2672 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Kale-Anderson-Domaine-de-la-Riviere-Winemaker.gif\" alt=\"Kale Anderson\" width=\"180\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a>Kale Anderson has been working with Domaine de la Riviere since 2017<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kale meet Marla and Geoff in 2011 at a barbecue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They chatted back and forth for a month and then he asked if he could make their wine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2016 he was at Pahlmeyer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kale has his own brand and also consults for about 10-12 other clients.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of those clients is VGS. He works very closely with their winemaker Eric Stauffer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kale, Geoff, and Duff (Son) blend the wines. Duff has a good palate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">The Chardonnays<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Richie Vineyard. They get the original Old Wente fruit. It comes from wide rows and calcareous soils.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next Door Neighbor is literally next door. The vineyard is the Lone Oak Vineyard. It is owned by the Rosenblum family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flora Maria Vineyard \u2013 was ended in 2023. They added Bacigalupi in 2024 to replace it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">The Pinot Noirs<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 2022 Middle Reach is 1\/3 El Diablo and 2\/3 Estate fruit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Two Forces is Geoff\u2019s two favorite clones. Pommard and Swan. The 2022 is 70% Pommard and 30% Swan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heritage Black is mainly Mt.
