\"RoseThe KensWineGuide.com Tasting Panel recently tried some Ros\u00e9 wines to see if\u00c2\u00a0Ros\u00e9\u00c2\u00a0is\u00c2\u00a0 the new summer wine of choice.\u00c2\u00a0 W<\/span>ill Ros\u00e9 ultimately become more popular than Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Beaujolais<\/st1:place>, or expensive Pinot Noir?\u00c2\u00a0 O<\/span>ur conclusion is that Ros\u00e9 is a nice option if folks want to try something different, but we think most\u00c2\u00a0people will stick to their favorite wines.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>On the whole, we found many of the Ros\u00e9s we tasted to be Good, but only a couple to be Very Good.<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/font><\/o:p>In our blind tasting, we tried 12 Ros\u00e9s.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We recommended 2 of them as Very Good.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We also recommended 4 others with an honorable mention of Good+, which means we scored them\u00c2\u00a0above 86 points but not quite 87 points.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n

<\/font>What wines scored Very Good and why?<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p>\"FritzThe winner was the 2007 Fritz Ros\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> $16.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0We have<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0recommended this wine two vintages in a row.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This year we scored this wine an 87.25.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It<\/span> is made from a variety of grapes.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The blend is 39% Zinfandel, 33% Syrah, 16% Pinot Noir, and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This magical blend from the Dry<\/st1:placename> Creek<\/st1:placetype> Valley<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> offers predominately peach flavors, but nectarine and grapefruit were noted as well.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We think you will really like this wine for your next pool party.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>There are only 206 cases of this gem so going direct to the winery might be your best bet. <\/font>\"CriosOur next favorite\u00c2\u00a0Ros\u00e9 came from Susana Balbo.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Her 2007 \u201cCrios Ros\u00e9 of Malbec\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> for $12 scored an 87.16.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This Ros\u00e9 offering from Mendoza<\/st1:city>, Argentina <\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>is made from 100% Malbec.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This light to medium bodied wine is smooth, crisp, and nicely balanced. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>The flavor profile is light strawberry, with a hint of cranberry and a touch of sweetness.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The other good news is they also made a lot of this tasty value wine.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They made 12,000 cases.<\/font> <\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p>Our honorable mention wines are as follows: <\/font><\/p>\n

#3 2007 De Meye Wines Ros\u00e9 “Shiraz<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>Ros\u00e9”<\/a><\/strong>(Stellenbosch, South Africa<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>) $12 (86.75)<\/font><\/p>\n

#4 2007 Darien<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>Ros\u00e9 “Rosado”<\/a><\/strong>(100% Tempranillo) (Rioja<\/st1:city>, Spain<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>) $13 (86.67)<\/font><\/p>\n

#5 2007 Simi Winery Ros\u00e9 “Roseto”<\/a><\/strong>(Sh\/Vio)(Sonoma County<\/st1:city>, CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $15 (86.42)<\/font><\/p>\n

#6 2007 Ventana Vineyards Ros\u00e9 “Dry Rosado”<\/a><\/strong>(Gren\/Sy) (Arroyo Seco<\/st1:city>, CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $18 (86.42)<\/font><\/p>\n

Before we closed the book on Ros\u00e9s, we had a few wines that came in\u00c2\u00a0after the official\u00c2\u00a0tasting that we tasted non-blind.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>These wines all scored Very Good or Good+ so we thought you might appreciate a couple more options.\u00c2\u00a0 \"Caral<\/span>The first option was Carol Shelton's 2007 \u201cRendezvous Ros\u00e9\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> $?? from Mendocino County<\/st1:city>, CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I found this Very Good, light bodied wine to be dry, round, and the most European in style of all the Ros\u00e9s we tried recently.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It reminded me of the classic Ros\u00e9s we get from Provence<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The flavors I tasted were raspberry like with dried cranberry notes.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I would suggest that you enjoy it with a burger on the deck this summer.<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n

The second one we would recommend is Mulderbosch's 2007 \u201cRos\u00e9 of Cabernet\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> $12.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This Very Good wine is dry, round, crisp, with dusty strawberry like flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is a nice Ros\u00e9 option for Red Wine lovers.<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n

The third option is the 2007 Domaine Houchart Ros\u00e9<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>$10 from “Cotes de Provence”.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We found this bright pink Good+ wine to have tasty berry flavors with notes of minerality.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This refreshing wine would be nice by the pool and with oysters or bacon wrapped scallops.<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This is the second year in a row we have recommended this value priced Ros\u00e9.<\/p>\n

<\/font><\/o:p><\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p>\"CastelloThe last option is an interesting Ros\u00e9 like the sparkling wine option that I came across from Banfi Cellars.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This option is called the 2007 “Rosa Regale” from Castello Banfi<\/a><\/strong> $20.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine from the Piedmont <\/st1:place>is made from 100% Brachetto d’Acqui.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>What?…I never heard of it either, but what I can tell you is that it is quite tasty.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We recent attended a wine tasting party, and I brought this fun wine with us. It was a hit! It is a cranberry colored wine, with fine bubbles, and it opened with a pleasant light cranberry bouquet with a touch of spice. On the palate, this wine is round, lightly sweet, has a touch of fizz, with light raspberry like flavors.\u00c2\u00a0It is really tasty and a perfect aperitif.<\/font>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n

Overall, the general consensus was that most panel members would prefer a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, or their favorite mid level wine over the Good Ros\u00e9 wines.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>However, the Very Good\u00c2\u00a0Ros\u00e9 options\u00c2\u00a0would be a nice change, and provide\u00c2\u00a0fun options to share with friends over the hot summer months.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Enjoy – Ken<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
