{"id":28,"date":"2008-06-03T18:51:55","date_gmt":"2008-06-03T18:51:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=28"},"modified":"2008-06-30T18:06:14","modified_gmt":"2008-06-30T18:06:14","slug":"finger-lakes-wines-compete-for-the-2008-golden-nose-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=28","title":{"rendered":"Finger Lakes Wines Compete for the 2008 Golden Nose Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ken and I had the privledge\u00c2\u00a0of attending the\u00c2\u00a0the<strong>\u00c2\u00a03rd annual<\/strong> <strong>2008 Golden Nose\u00c2\u00a0Awards<\/strong> in the <strong>Finger Lakes Wine Region<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0May 30 &#8211; June 1.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0This fun event was held at the <strong>Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York,<\/strong> just\u00c2\u00a0south of Seneca Lake in upstate New York.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend opened up with a judges reception Friday evening, from 6-8pm at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockwellmuseum.org\/flash\/index.html\" title=\"Rockwell Museum of Western Art\">Rockwell Museum of Western Art<\/a><\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/Rockwell%20Museum.gif\" alt=\"Rockwell Museum of Western Art\" height=\"91\" \/>in Corning, New York.\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0Rockwell Museum of Western Art is considered to be\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;the best of the west in the east.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Delicious hors d&#8217;oeuvres and Finger Lakes wines\u00c2\u00a0were served at this event.\u00c2\u00a0 Judges and their guests were encouraged to\u00c2\u00a0visit the museum&#8217;s exhibits on all 3 floors as well as visit their beautiful roof deck overlooking the city of Corning.\u00c2\u00a0 We were also very lucky to see\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0newly opening\u00c2\u00a0exhibit,\u00c2\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Yosemite 1938: On the Trail with Ansel Adams and Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe.&#8221; <\/strong>In 1938, photographer, Ansel Adams, took a group of friends, including Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe and David McAlpin through Yosemite&#8217;s backcountry. The album produced from images of this trip comprises the stunning landscapes of Yosemite as well as intimate candid portraits of his life-long friends. This rare album\u00c2\u00a0is on loan from the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.\u00c2\u00a0 In addition to the Ansel Adams exhibit, Ken and I were also impressed with the paintings of Native Americans and western landscapes. \u00c2\u00a0This event\u00c2\u00a0was a good\u00c2\u00a0opportunity to meet some of the fellow judges and\u00c2\u00a0winemakers, and\u00c2\u00a0enjoy the museum.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden Nose Awards, itself, is held at the <strong>Corning Museum of Glass<\/strong>,\u00c2\u00a0in Corning, New York.\u00c2\u00a0<strong>It is a consumer judging event, rather than a strictly professional judging event<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 There is a mandatory judge training session Saturday morning, from 9:00-11:30 where professional wine judges teach you, the consumer, some of the finer points in the art of\u00c2\u00a0judging wine.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a great training!\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/GoldenNoseGlasses.gif\" alt=\"Golden Nose judge training\" height=\"135\" \/>We smelled and tasted controlled samples to learn what\u00c2\u00a0wine should, and should not taste and smell like. \u00c2\u00a0For example, wine should not smell like wet cardboard.\u00c2\u00a0 If it does, that probably means the wine is corked (the cork has failed and the wine has gone bad).\u00c2\u00a0 There were examples of acidity, sweetness, etc.. Each presenter spent about 25 minutes teaching us\u00c2\u00a0different aspects of the art of\u00c2\u00a0judging wine.\u00c2\u00a0 The presenters\u00c2\u00a0were very down to earth and some were quite\u00c2\u00a0humorous.\u00c2\u00a0 It was truly a hands on experience.\u00c2\u00a0 There was nothing intimidating about it.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>The art of judging a wine is not something you can really learn in a book.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 You really need to experience these tastes and smells first hand.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ken was particularly impressed with <strong>Peter Bell&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0presentation.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Peter, the winemaker at Fox Run Vineyards<\/strong>,\u00c2\u00a0provided water samples to explain the various components of wine. Since most wines are generally made up of at least\u00c2\u00a080% water, this was a good starting point.\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/GoldenNoseJudging.gif\" alt=\"Golden Node Awards judge training\" height=\"135\" \/>Peter provided water samples with 12% ethanol to show the alcohol effect and taste of wine as compared with just plain water.\u00c2\u00a0 Alcohol adds body to the wine, a touch of sweetness, and tastes like\u00c2\u00a0vodka.\u00c2\u00a0 Another sample included 5% sugar, which adds body,\u00c2\u00a0texture, and flavor. \u00c2\u00a0Acidity was added to yet another sample providing lemon like flavor and\u00c2\u00a0a drying\u00c2\u00a0effect.\u00c2\u00a0 Astringency was provided by adding tannin (polyphenols) to the next water sample.\u00c2\u00a0 Ken and I both thought this session was awesome. \u00c2\u00a0Overall, the judge training was very good for novices and wine connoisseurs alike.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was a lunch break\u00c2\u00a0around 12:00.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a\u00c2\u00a0delicious lunch with salad, ham, potatoes, turkey, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 The actual wine judging took place from approximately 12:30-4:00, with multiple flights of wine being judged.\u00c2\u00a0 Ken judged approximately\u00c2\u00a028 wines over the course of 3 hours\u00c2\u00a0with about\u00c2\u00a06 different wine flights\/varietals.\u00c2\u00a0 Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Double Gold awards were given out.\u00c2\u00a0 A <strong>Double Gold<\/strong> <strong>award<\/strong> indicates that the panel unanimously agreed that the wine was a Gold medal winner.\u00c2\u00a0 A <strong>Best in Class<\/strong> <strong>award<\/strong> indicates the wine had the highest combined score of the\u00c2\u00a0judging for that wine varietal.<\/p>\n<p>We saw many people tirelessly volunteering their time to make this event such a great success.\u00c2\u00a0 There were event volunteers who spent much of the day performing the\u00c2\u00a0absolutely essential tasks of\u00c2\u00a0washing wine glasses, pouring\u00c2\u00a0flights, collecting used wine glasses, and dumping &#8220;spit buckets,&#8221; not to mention collecting and tallying wine scores.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The judges had free time from 4-7:00pm, while the set up crew transformed the auditorium from a judging competition into a big evening celebration, all in the same physical space.\u00c2\u00a0 During this time, Ken and I visited the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmog.org\/\" title=\"Corning Museum of Glass\">Corning Museum of Glass<\/a><\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t visited, you should check it out.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great museum.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>The exhibit I found most interesting\u00c2\u00a0highlighted Drs. Donald B. Keck, Robert D. Maurer and Peter C. Schultz, who invented low-loss optical fiber<\/strong>, while working at Corning Incorporated in the 1970s.\u00c2\u00a0 You may say to yourself, what is that? and why is it important? <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/GoldenNoseCMoG.gif\" alt=\"Corning Museum of Glass\" height=\"135\" \/><strong>Keck, Maurer and Schultz&#8217; invention,<\/strong> <strong>recognized as a monumental technical breakthrough<\/strong>, <strong>paved the way for the commercialization of optical fiber, creating a revolution in telecommunications and laying the cornerstone for the information superhighway.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 If it weren&#8217;t for them, I probably wouldn&#8217;t be writing this blog post, and you wouldn&#8217;t be reading it!\u00c2\u00a0 Needless to say, we loved the museum.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We left the museum around 6:00, and hurried back to our hotel room to get changed for the festive evening ahead, complete with great food, wine, and entertainment, not to mention the Golden Nose Awards.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived back at the Corning Museum of Glass around 7:00.\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0tight schedule during the day was essential to\u00c2\u00a0beginning the\u00c2\u00a0Golden Nose Award celebration on time at 7:00.\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/GoldenNoseTK.gif\" alt=\"Golden Nose Award celebration\" height=\"135\" \/> The\u00c2\u00a0food was fantastic and included, among other dishes, <strong>beef apple Gorgonzola crostini, grilled beef tenderloin with red demi glace, seared duck breast with red currant glaze, French green lentil with feta cheese and\u00c2\u00a0mint, pan seared sea bass with lemon butter on a bed of wild rice pilaf, and yummy scalloped potatoes<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 My favorite was the sea bass and Ken&#8217;s was the tenderloin.\u00c2\u00a0 The dessert table was truly decadent as well.\u00c2\u00a0 My favorite desserts were the <strong>huge chocolate covered strawberries<\/strong> and the <strong>chocolate mousse<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As you might expect, the Finger Lakes wines judged during the day were also featured\u00c2\u00a0at the party that evening.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>There were<\/strong> <strong>approximately 292 wines judged\u00c2\u00a0that day<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 The best of which, were served that evening.\u00c2\u00a0The top awards went to the the entertainment was terrific?\u00c2\u00a0 We\u00c2\u00a0enjoyed listening to\u00c2\u00a0the very talented, <strong>local\u00c2\u00a0favorite, Virgil Cain<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/GoldenNoseParty.gif\" alt=\"Golden Nose Awards party\" height=\"135\" \/> As I listened to him, I kept thinking he could be the next American Idol.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>The author of the <a href=\"http:\/\/fingerlakesweekendwino.blogspot.com\/\" title=\"Finger Lakes Weekend Wino\">Finger Lakes Weekend Wino<\/a> blog, Rob Lane<\/strong>, <strong>also made a guest appearance.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 We were lucky enough to meet and speak with Rob later in the evening.\u00c2\u00a0 We have been reading Rob&#8217;s The Finger Lakes Weekend Wino wine blog\u00c2\u00a0for over a year and it was great to finally meet Rob face to face.\u00c2\u00a0 We are admirers\u00c2\u00a0of\u00c2\u00a0his very informative wine blog\u00c2\u00a0devoted to\u00c2\u00a0the Finger Lakes Wine Region.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We thoroughly enjoyed our first Golden Nose Awards. <strong>The 2009 Golden Nose Award\u00c2\u00a0date has already been set for May 30, 2009.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not too early to make a note of it, and mark your calendars for next year.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The
