During the interview, we covered two white wines: a 2023 Sauvignon Blanc and a 2023 Chardonnay. On the red side, we covered a 2023 Pinot Noir and a 2024 Pinot Noir. For the second half of the tasting, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines: the winery’s 2021 Napa Valley offering, two 2022 single-vineyard offerings, and, wrapping up the tasting, a very limited Cab from the 2023 vintage. We also covered or will be covering a few other wines from Whitehall Lane in future tastings, so you will be able to read all about those wines as well. In this post, you will learn more about Jason and Katie and the history of the Whitehall Lane winery and read our reviews of all of these terrific wines.

Before we get to the wines, I thought I would share some tidbits that Jason & Katie shared in the interview.

Whitehall Lane was established in the 1970’s. In 1979, two brothers (Art Finklestein and Alan Stein) built the winery and directed their winemaking efforts successfully to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They named the winery after the road that runs along the southern border of the property, Whitehall Lane. Their first vintage was made in 1981. They owned the winery from 1979-1987.

In 1988, after nearly a decade of ownership, the Finklestein/Steen ownership group sold the winery to a Japanese businessman, Hideaki Ando, who then owned it until 1993.

In March of 1993, Tom Leonardini, Sr. was looking for a business to buy while operating his wine shop in San Francisco that he started in the early 1980s.

He learned that Whitehall Lane was up for sale. He put an offer in on a Monday and the following week bought the winery.

Tom enjoys drinking great wine. We’re committed to making superior wines”.
