It's August and it’s\u00c2\u00a0hot!\u00c2\u00a0 Now is the time to dive into\u00c2\u00a0a\u00c2\u00a0chilled Sauvignon Blanc, the perfect summertime sipper.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We\u00c2\u00a0think well made Sauvignon Blanc is\u00c2\u00a0a great\u00c2\u00a0wine to enjoy by the pool on a hot summer day.\u00c2\u00a0 It is a\u00c2\u00a0very refreshing wine\u00c2\u00a0and best served chilled.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We recently tasted 17 wines and recommended 6 of them as Very Good or better.<\/p>\n

\"FritzOur Sauvignon Blanc winner came from the<\/strong> Fritz Winery.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This winery\u00c2\u00a0has\u00c2\u00a0scored\u00c2\u00a0very well with our KWG Tasting Panel lately.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>As a matter of fact, both of their entries made our recommended list.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The 2007 Fritz \u201cRussian<\/st1:placename> River<\/st1:placetype> Valley,<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>\u201d\u009d $18<\/a><\/strong> offering was the winner. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>This very food-friendly wine scored a Very Good+ 90 points from the KWG Panel.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It clearly was our favorite\u00c2\u00a0wine of the evening\u00c2\u00a0and our clear cut winner.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was terrifically balanced and showed tasty lime flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I personally think this wine would be a perfect match\u00c2\u00a0for\u00c2\u00a0Calvados Chicken or Pork Tenderloin with an Apple Compote Sauce.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We really enjoyed this wine.<\/p>\n

\"ChildressOur second place wine came from NASCAR racing legend, Richard Childress.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>His Sauvignon Blanc hails from Lexington, North Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The 2006 Childress Vineyards “Cellar Select” for $19<\/strong><\/a> was a very nice wine.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The interesting thing about this wine is that the KWG Tasting Panel commented several times on how much they liked this wine but would not have pegged it for a Sauvignon Blanc.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Its honeydew melon bouquet and creamy, smooth mouthfeel gave it a different approach.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The flavor profile was green apple-like flavors with a\u00c2\u00a0hint lime\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0a touch of light vanilla. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Again it was different, but we all really liked this Very Good white wine.<\/p>\n

Our third place\u00c2\u00a0wine was from Colchaqua, Chile.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Chile has been producing some very Good value Sauvignon Blanc lately.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This offering from Viu Manent is a touch dated, but clearly still showing strong.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The 2005 Viu Manent \u201cSecreto,\u201d\u009d $13<\/strong><\/a> had a little zip to it.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was balanced with green apple flavors and lots of minerality to it.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored this wine Very Good with 87.5 points.<\/p>\n

The rest of our recommendations are as follows:<\/p>\n

#4 Concha y Toro 2006 “Terrunyo Block 28”<\/a><\/strong> (Casablanca Valley<\/st1:city>, Chile<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>), $25 (87.4)<\/p>\n

#5 Turtle Creek 2007<\/a><\/strong> (Napa Valley<\/st1:city>, CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> — Made in Lincoln<\/st1:city>, MA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>), $15 (87.4)<\/p>\n

#6 Fritz 2007 \u201cEstate Grown\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> (Dry Creek Valley<\/st1:city>, CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>), $22 (87.4)<\/p>\n

\"CadarettaWe have also\u00c2\u00a0tried several other Sauvignon Blanc wines over the last couple of months non blind that we think you would like.\u00c2\u00a0 The first one we would recommend is a blend.\u00c2\u00a0 The 2007 Cadaretta “SBS,” $22<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>is a blend of 73% Sauvignon Blanc and 27% Semillon.\u00c2\u00a0We\u00c2\u00a0think this\u00c2\u00a0wine\u00c2\u00a0is rather suave, very well balanced, and has very nice\u00c2\u00a0integrated acidity. The\u00c2\u00a0flavor profile is granny smith apple with hints of pear and lime.\u00c2\u00a0 It finishes dry and refreshing.\u00c2\u00a0 One of my old favorites from New Zealand is still going strong.\u00c2\u00a0 The 2007 Coopers Creek, $15<\/a><\/strong> from Marlborough is always a good value.\u00c2\u00a0 This year’s vintage is well-rounded, slightly creamy, and displays slightly tart lime-like flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 Our last recommendation is the 2007 St Supery\u00c2\u00a0“Napa Valley” Sauvignon Blanc, $21<\/a><\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine has slightly tart lime flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 It will appeal to fans of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and we would pair this with swordfish or chicken.<\/p>\n

Overall,\u00c2\u00a0we really think Sauvignon Blanc is\u00c2\u00a0an ideal summer wine.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It is\u00c2\u00a0dry, refreshing, reasonably priced, and best served chilled<\/span>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Have fun trying these.<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Cheers, Ken<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
