{"id":34,"date":"2008-09-01T21:43:48","date_gmt":"2008-09-01T21:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=34"},"modified":"2008-09-01T21:43:48","modified_gmt":"2008-09-01T21:43:48","slug":"merlot-the-noble-grape-deserves-respect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=34","title":{"rendered":"Merlot, the Noble Grape, Deserves Respect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am tired of the Merlot bashing.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Merlot is a noble grape and deserves some respect.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, Merlot did suffer from over planting which in turn led to some thin and poor quality wines.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>But that happens when some wine producers jump on the bandwagon and push out lesser quality wines to meet the demand of a grape varietal<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/wp-admin\/\" height=\"1\" \/> that is really popular.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The problem is too many got on the bandwagon and did this, which resulted in an over supply and poor quality, especially at the lower end price points.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 Some have speculated that this\u00c2\u00a0might happen\u00c2\u00a0in the Pinot Noir world.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Watch out Pinot fans, you&apos;ll potentially be overpaying for poor quality Pinot soon, if not already.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><span>However, that&#8217;s not to say there isn&#8217;t some terrific Merlot out there. <\/span>To prove our point, we recently conducted our annual Merlot blind tasting.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel tried 18 wines and we recommended 12 of them.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Our winners did tend to come from the high end of the spectrum, but there were some value choices as well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Bravante%202005%20Howell%20Mountain%20Merlot.gif\" alt=\"Bravante 2005 Howell Mountain Merlot\" height=\"394\" \/>Who won the Merlot tasting? Our Merlot winner came from Bravante Vineyards, which sources their Merlot grapes from up on <st1:place><st1:placename>Howell<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Mountain in California.<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> We sure love grown mountain Merlot fruit.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3709\" title=\"Bravante 2005 Howell Mountain Merlot\">2005 Bravante \u201c<st1:place><st1:placename>Howell<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Mountain<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> $39 scored an impressive 91.5 and was clearly the panel&#8217;s favorite.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine is only made in limited quantities, as there are only 200 cases.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>If you can find it, we can assure you, you will be rewarded.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This Merlot is anything but wimpy.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is rich, robust, and packed with spicy black cherry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We loved it.\u00c2\u00a0 The panel felt this awesome wine would pair very well with a NY strip steak, a rib eye, or a veal chop.<\/p>\n<p>Our 2<sup>nd<\/sup> place finisher was another big Merlot that caught our attention.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3730\" title=\"Luna 2004 Napa Valley Merlot\">2004 Luna from <st1:place><st1:city>Napa Valley<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place><\/a><\/strong> $40 scored a 90.7.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This medium-bodied wine is rich, concentrated with\u00c2\u00a0some edginess, has spicy blackberry flavors, and some dark chocolate as well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was well worth the money and certainly worth seeking out.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>The 3<sup>rd<\/sup> place finisher came from a winery which has been quite successful with the KWG Tasting Panel recently.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Their Pinot won by a landslide a few months back.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3711\" title=\"Bianchi Winery 2005 Signature Selection Merlot\">Bianchi 2005 \u201cSignature Selection\u201d\u009d Merlot<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>$18 from Paso Robles was no slouch either.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine scored a 90.3 from the tasting panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine from the Smoot Vineyard was smooth, silky, and polished.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It had wonderful cherry vanilla flavors as well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Even though this wine was not as robust as the first 2 wines, it was quite approachable and very food-friendly.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This pleasing wine is very affordable and definitely will warrant a second glass or more.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/J%20Lohr%202006%20Los%20Osos%20Merlot.gif\" alt=\"J Lohr 2006 Los Osos Merlot\" height=\"161\" \/>Our 4<sup>th<\/sup> place finisher is probably the best deal we found in our tasting.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3728\" title=\"J Lohr 2006 Merlot Los Osos\"><strong>2006 J. Lohr \u201cLos Osos\u201d\u009d Merlot<\/strong><\/a> $15 is a fantastic value.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This well balanced wine displays tasty spicy raspberry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is not overly complex, but Very Good.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine scored an 89.3 from the tasting panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel felt this wine was very food-friendly and would pair quite well with a pork tenderloin.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 This would be the perfect Merlot for a restaurant glass pour program.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Our 5<sup>th<\/sup> place finisher was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3710\" title=\"Bravante 2005 Trio\">2005 Bravante \u201cTrio\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> $39.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine is a blend of 51% Merlot, 44% Cab, &amp; 5% Cab Franc.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The 2004 vintage of this wine was one of our favorite wines last year.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The 2005 was also well liked and scored an 88.6 from the tasting panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel felt this wine was built for a steak.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"163\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Alexander%20Valley%20Vineyard%202005%20Merlot.gif\" alt=\"Alexander Valley Vineyards 2005 Merlot \" height=\"214\" \/>Our 6<sup>th<\/sup> place winner was another value wine.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3731\" title=\"Alexander Valley Vineyards 2005 Merlot \"><strong>2005 <st1:place><st1:placename>Alexander<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename>Valley<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> Vineyards Merlot<\/strong><\/a> $20 was quite balanced and approachable.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine displays sweet black cherry flavors and a touch of oak.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine scored an 88.58 from the panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It would be a perfect choice for your next barbecue with your grilled barbecue chicken.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Our 7<sup>th<\/sup> place finisher comes from one of the leaders of Merlot in California.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 Swanson&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>2004 vintage was one of our favorite Merlots from\u00c2\u00a0last year.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 This year <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3732\" title=\"Swanson 2005 Merlot\">Swanson&#8217;s <\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3732\" title=\"Swanson 2005 Merlot\">2005\u00c2\u00a0Merlot<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>$36 from Oakville, CA scored an 88.4 from this year&apos;s tasting panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was smooth and\u00c2\u00a0elegant, with gentle blueberry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel felt this wine would be a nice match for Filet Mignon.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00c2\u00a0additional Merlot recommendations:<\/p>\n<p>#8 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3729\" title=\"Erba Mountainside Vineyards 2003 Merlot \">Erba 2003 \u201cMountainside\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> (<st1:place><st1:city>Napa Valley<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $37 (88.4)<\/p>\n<p>#9 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3753\" title=\"Fleur du Cap 2005 Merlot\">Fleur du Cap 2005<\/a><\/strong> (Coastal <st1:place><st1:city>Region<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region>South Africa<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>) $11 (88.4)<\/p>\n<p>#10 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3712\" title=\"Joseph Carr 2006 Napa Valley Merlot\">Joseph Carr 2006<\/a><\/strong> (<st1:place><st1:city>Napa Valley<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $20 (87.7)<\/p>\n<p>#11 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3714\" title=\"Childress Vineyards 2005 Reserve Merlot\">Childress 2005 \u201cReserve\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> (<st1:state><st1:place>North Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>) $25 (87.1)<\/p>\n<p>#12 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/\" title=\"Reininger 2005 Helix Merlot\">Reininger 2005 \u201cHelix\u201d\u009d<\/a><\/strong> (<st1:place><st1:city>Columbia Valley<\/st1:city>, <st1:state>CA<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>) $22 (87.0)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Pride%20Mountain%202005%20Merlot.gif\" alt=\"Pride Mountain 2005 Merlot\" height=\"213\" \/>Over the last six months we have tried several other Merlots that raise the bar of Merlot to absolutely stratospheric heights.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Lets first start with a Bob Foley made wine.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>In my opinion, Bob is the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to American made Merlot.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3090\" title=\"Pride Mountain 2005 Merlot\">2005 <st1:place><st1:placename>Pride<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Mountain<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> Merlot<\/a><\/strong> $56 is an excellent representation of what a very talented winemaker can do with this grape.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I challenge you to drink this wine and come up with anything but praise.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Another wonderful Merlot option is the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3249\" title=\"Kendall Jackson 2005 Taylor Peak\">2005 Kendall Jackson \u201c<st1:place><st1:placename>Taylor Peak<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>\u201d\u009d Merlot<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>$40 from Bennett Valley, CA. This wine\u00c2\u00a0is part of their Highland Estates series.
