<strong>Shiraz<\/strong> and <strong>Syrahs<\/strong>, the KensWineGuide.com tasting panel awarded top honors to wines that were grown and produced in Australia, Argentina, and South Africa.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Our winner is a familiar name to those who follow Aussie Shiraz.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4212\" title=\"Henrys Drive 2005 Shiraz\"><strong>2005 Henry&apos;s Drive Shiraz<\/strong><\/a> <strong>$40<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This 100% Shiraz hails from the Padthaway region in Australia.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel scored this impressive wine <strong>91.43 <\/strong>points.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was medium-bodied, smooth, well balanced, and displayed delicious blueberry flavors. <span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>There was also an interesting touch of pepper and spice as well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel was very impressed with this Shiraz.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Luca%202006%20Laborde%20Double%20Select%20Syrah.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Luca 2006 Laborde Double Select Syrah\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In second place was a Syrah that was a bit more of a shocker to the panel when it was unveiled.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4243\" title=\"Luca 2006 Laborde Double Select Syrah\"><strong>Luca 2006 Syrah \u201cLaborde Double Select\u201d\u009d Syrah<\/strong><\/a>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine is 100% Syrah and comes from the La Consulta region in Argentina.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, Argentina!<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>At <strong>$25<\/strong> per bottle the panel thought that this wine was a steal.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They gave it <strong>91.14 <\/strong>points.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was a very dark opaque, purple colored wine that was medium-bodied, ultra smooth, and very well balanced.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It also had delicious blueberry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I sense a blueberry flavor theme happening here.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>When it came to ordering wines for the panelists own cellars, this was the Syrah of choice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Rudi%20Schultz%202006%20Syrah.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Rudi Schultz 2006 Syrah\" height=\"161\" \/>Third place was captured by a wine that always does well with the KWG tasting panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4210\" title=\"Rudi Schultz 2006 Syrah\"><strong>2006 Rudi Schultz Syrah<\/strong><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0from Stellenbosch, South Africa always seems to finish near the top of the list.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This year the panel scored this wine <strong>90.86 <\/strong>points.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel felt this offering would appeal to readers who like Syrahs from the Rhone Valley.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It displayed some very interesting smoky black currant flavors with notes of blueberry and oak.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It also was quite dry.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel felt this wine was still a bit young and would really develop into something special with some cellar time.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Buy a bottle of this wine and stash it away for a year or two.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Henrys%20Drive%202006%20Dead%20Letter%20Offfice%20Shiraz.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Henrys Drive 2006 Dead Letter Office Shiraz\" height=\"144\" \/>In fourth place we returned to the Henry&apos;s Drive family.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4229\" title=\"Henrys Drive 2006 Dead Letter Office Shiraz\">2006 Henry&apos;s Drive \u201cDead Letter Office\u201d\u009d Shiraz<\/a><\/strong> for <strong>$27 <\/strong>scored Very Good+ with <strong>90 points<\/strong> from the panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This wine was sourced from\u00c2\u00a0two regions in Australia.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Those regions are the McLaren Vale and the\u00c2\u00a0Padthaway.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This offering was more like the traditional Aussie style with its smooth, but juicy blackberry flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel would pair this wine with a big thick ribeye or duck.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Yangarrra%202006%20Shiraz.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Yangarra 2006 Shiraz\" height=\"175\" \/>Just missing the <strong>Very Good+<\/strong> mark was our 5th place finisher.\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4226\" title=\"Yangarra 2006 Shiraz\">2006 Yangarra &#8220;Single Vineyard&#8221; Shiraz<\/a><\/strong> for <strong>$25<\/strong> scored a Very Good <strong>89.33<\/strong> points from the panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This 100% Shiraz is also from the McLaren Vale region in <st1:country-region><st1:place>Australia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It also held true to the traditional Aussie style with its juicy and spicy black raspberry favors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>There were notes of chocolate as well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel thought this wine would nicely complement barbecue ribs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"102\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Carchelo%202006%20Altico%20A.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Altico A 2006 Syrah\" height=\"400\" \/>Our sixth place finisher was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4225\" title=\"Carchelo Altico A Syrah\">Carchelo 2006 \u201cAltico A\u201d\u009d Syrah<\/a> $20<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel was impressed with this wine from Jumilla, Spain.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Most folks do not equate Syrah with Spain so we were very pleased to see this wine perform well.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored this wine Very Good with <strong>88.79 <\/strong>points.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Next up was a blend from down under.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4221\" title=\"Lane 2006 Off The Leash Max\"><strong>Lane Vineyard 2006 \u201cOff the Leash Max\u201d\u009d<\/strong><\/a> <strong>$24 <\/strong>is a blend of 94% Shiraz &amp; 6% Viognier.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This Cote Rotie styled wine from Adelaide Hills, Australia scored <strong>88.71 <\/strong>points.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was very easy to drink and displayed juicy black currant like flavors.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel thought this wine would pair quite nicely with beef bourguignon.<\/p>\n<p>The other Syrahs that we recommended are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>8) <strong><a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4242\" title=\"Trecini 2006 Syrah\">Trecini 2006 Syrah &#8220;Ladi&apos;s Vineyard&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> <strong>$25 <\/strong>(Sonoma County, CA) (<strong>88.36<\/strong>)<br \/>\n10) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4239\" title=\"Longwood 2006 Shiraz\"><strong>Longwood 2006 Shiraz<\/strong><\/a> <strong>$30 <\/strong>(McLaren Vale) (<strong>88.14<\/strong>)<br \/>\n11) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4238\" title=\"Cambria 2005 Tepusquet Vineyard Syrah\"><strong>Cambria 2005 Syrah &#8220;Tepusquet Vineyard&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> <strong>$19<\/strong> (Santa Maria Valley, CA) (<strong>87.93<\/strong>)<br \/>\n12) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4244\" title=\"Ross Estate 2006 Shiraz\"><strong>Ross Estate 2006 Shiraz &#8220;Single Vineyard&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> <strong>$28 <\/strong>(Barossa Valley, Aust.) (<strong>87.86<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>In our mini-tasting of additional Syrahs we recommended a few as well.<\/p>\n<p>We thought the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4234\" title=\"Brampton 2006 Shiraz\">2006 Brampton Shiraz<\/a><\/strong> <strong>$14<\/strong> from South Africa was made in an Old World style.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It opened with a smoky campfire like bouquet.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was medium-bodied and showed no hard edges.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Its flavor profile was an austere oak influenced black raspberry.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Neither the oak nor the fruit are dominant here.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>They are equal parts.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The group thought this wine would pair nicely with beef brisket.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored this wine Very Good with <strong>88 poin<\/strong>ts.<\/p>\n<p>On the value side we found a Good Shiraz blend worth considering given its <strong>$12<\/strong> price tag.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4200\" title=\"Pillar Box 2006 Red\">2006 Pillar Box &#8220;Red&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> is a Good wine.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored it <strong>86 points<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is made from 50% Shiraz, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>If you like your everyday reds to be ripe and fruity, this wine might be the perfect option for you.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Try it with a barbecue pulled pork sandwich and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Shirvington%202006%20Shiraz.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Shirvington 2006 Shiraz\" height=\"103\" \/>On the completely opposite end of the spectrum we tried\u00c2\u00a0two Collectible Shirazs that are worth noting.\u00c2\u00a0 The first is the always impressive <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3727\" title=\"Shirvington 2006 Shiraz\">2006 Shirvington Shiraz<\/a><\/strong> <strong>$75<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 We thought this wine was Excellent and we thought it was quite memorable.\u00c2\u00a0 My client who we shared this with was still talking about it days later.\u00c2\u00a0 We scored this wine <strong>94 points<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 The other collectible Syrah that I wanted to mention was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4183\" title=\"Spring Mountain 2005 Syrah\">2005 Spring Mountain Syrah<\/a><\/strong> <strong>$55 <\/strong>from Napa Valley.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine is consistently\u00c2\u00a0well made\u00c2\u00a0every year.\u00c2\u00a0 This year we scored the 2005 vintage Very Good+ with <strong>90 points<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All in all we were quite pleased with these tastings.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 In the main event,\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>12 out of 14 wines qualified as recommended.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I personally think this grape is going to continue to grow in popularity.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Cheers &#8211;
