{"id":48,"date":"2009-03-31T00:29:04","date_gmt":"2009-03-31T00:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=48"},"modified":"2009-03-31T00:29:04","modified_gmt":"2009-03-31T00:29:04","slug":"food-friendly-new-york-finger-lakes-rieslings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=48","title":{"rendered":"Food Friendly New York Finger Lakes Rieslings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/Finger%20Lakes%20scenic%20view.jpg\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Finger Lakes scenic view\" height=\"1\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"250\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_dest\/Finger%20Lakes%20wine%20country%20scenic%20view.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Finger Lakes wine country scenic view\" height=\"108\" \/>The Ken&apos;s Wine Guide Tasting Panel recently tasted <strong>New York Finger Lakes Rieslings<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0We were pleased with the quality of the wines we tasted.\u00c2\u00a0 Before we get to the Riesling results, I wanted to mention that Theresa and I visited this up and coming wine region in August 2007.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The Finger Lakes wine\u00c2\u00a0region is\u00c2\u00a0located in\u00c2\u00a0upstate New York,\u00c2\u00a0south of the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90), between Syracuse and Rochester.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0During our visit to the Finger Lakes wine region, we were impressed with how tranquil and scenic\u00c2\u00a0the area\u00c2\u00a0is.\u00c2\u00a0 We found the wineries to be welcoming and the wine to be of Very Good quality.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"101\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Riesling%20grape%20image.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Riesling grape image\" height=\"150\" \/>The Finger Lakes wine region is well known for its Rieslings.\u00c2\u00a0 We conducted two tastings of the <strong>2007 Rieslings from this region.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Our blind tasting was focused on \u201cDry\u201d\u009d Rieslings.\u00c2\u00a0 We reviewed\u00c2\u00a0twelve wines and recommended nine of them as Very Good or better.\u00c2\u00a0 In our second non-blind mini tasting, we reviewed &#8220;semi dry&#8221; or regular Rieslings.\u00c2\u00a0 From that tasting, we recommended five additional Rieslings.\u00c2\u00a0 In both wine tastings the Rieslings we recommended were food-friendly, and we suggested some foods we\u00c2\u00a0thought would\u00c2\u00a0pair well with the wines.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Hermann%20Wiemer%202007%20Magdalena%20Riesling.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Hermann Wiemer 2007 Magdalena Riesling\" height=\"195\" \/>Which wine won the Riesling tasting?\u00c2\u00a0 The winner was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4355\" title=\"2007 Hosmer Winery Riesling \">2007 Hermann J. Wiemer \u201cMagdalena Vineyard\u201d\u009d Dry Riesling<\/a> $30<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine was the only wine in this tasting to score in the Very Good+ range.\u00c2\u00a0 The panel awarded it with 90.1 points, and it was our clear winner.\u00c2\u00a0 It was light-bodied, impressively balanced, off-dry, and uniformly coated the mouth with lemon tea-like flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 The panel also noted some peach flavors and notes of minerality as well.\u00c2\u00a0 The finish is very refreshing and dries out in the aftertaste.\u00c2\u00a0 The panel would pair this terrific Riesling with swordfish or ham.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine is limited in production with only 160 cases made.\u00c2\u00a0 Call the winery and see if you can get some.\u00c2\u00a0 You will be very happy that you made the call.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Ravines%202007%20Argetsinger%20Riesling.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Ravines 2007 Argetsinger Riesling\" height=\"215\" \/>Our second place finisher was also a limited production single vineyard offering.\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4360\" title=\"2007 Ravines Wine Cellars Riesling \">Ravines 2007 \u201cArgetsinger Vineyard\u201d\u009d Dry Riesling<\/a> for $25<\/strong> was a very nice Riesling.\u00c2\u00a0 The panel scored this wine an 89.33.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine was truly a dry-styled wine.\u00c2\u00a0 It was also light-bodied, well-balanced, and crisp.\u00c2\u00a0 The flavor profile is citrus with mineral notes infused throughout.\u00c2\u00a0 The finish remained dry and was very refreshing.\u00c2\u00a0 This was another wine we thought would pair well with swordfish.\u00c2\u00a0 Again, I would call the winery to obtain some of this wine as there were only 150 cases made.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Hosmer%202007%20Dry%20Riesling.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Hosmer 2007 Dry Riesling\" height=\"226\" \/>In third place was our value-priced Riesling winner.\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4342\" title=\"2007 Hosmer Winery Riesling \">2007 Hosmer \u201cDry\u201d\u009d Riesling<\/a> for $12 <\/strong>is a steal.\u00c2\u00a0 Hosmer is located on <strong>Cayuga Lake<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 They made 350 cases of this wine.\u00c2\u00a0 At this price, it will be gone soon!\u00c2\u00a0 Be sure to stock up on this one for sure.\u00c2\u00a0 We scored this wine 89.3 points.\u00c2\u00a0 It is light-bodied, crisp, and brisk.\u00c2\u00a0 It displays tangy, green apple flavors with notes of grapefruit.\u00c2\u00a0 We recommend it with chicken divan or chicken cordon bleu.<\/p>\n<p>Our 4th and 5th place finishers both came from the Hermann Wiemer Winery.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4351\" title=\"2007 Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard Riesling \">2007 Hermann Wiemer Winery\u00c2\u00a0\u201cDry Reserve\u201d\u009d Riesling<\/a> for $25 <\/strong>scored 88.3 points.\u00c2\u00a0 It was medium-bodied, balanced, and had some viscosity.\u00c2\u00a0 It tasted off dry with ripe Anjou pear, and white peach-like flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 Just behind it was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4347\" title=\"2007 Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard Riesling \">2007 Hermann Wiemer \u201cDry\u201d\u009d Riesling<\/a><\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This entry level offering from Wiemer <strong>is a bargain at $18<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 It displays light lime flavors with hints of lemon, and notes of minerality.\u00c2\u00a0 With 3,500 cases made, this wine should be much easier to find than some of the others.\u00c2\u00a0 We scored this wine 88.2 points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Recommended Finger Lakes \u201cDry Rieslings\u201d\u009d:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6.) <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4366\" title=\"Wiemer 2007 HJW Riesling\">Hermann J. Wiemer 2007 Riesling \u201cHJW Vineyard Dry\u201d\u009d<\/a> $39<\/strong> (87.3)<br \/>\n7.) <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4343\" title=\"Dr. K 2007 Dry Riesling\">Dr. Konstantin Frank 2007 Riesling \u201cDry\u201d\u009d<\/a> $17<\/strong> (87.2)<br \/>\n8.) <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4369\" title=\"2007 Atwater Estate Vineyards Riesling \">Atwater Estate 2007 Riesling \u201cDry\u201d\u009d<\/a> $18<\/strong> (87.1)<br \/>\n9.) <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4345\" title=\"2007 Red Newt Cellars Riesling \">Red Newt 2007 Riesling \u201cDry Reserve\u201d\u009d<\/a> $24<\/strong> (87.0)<\/p>\n<p>In the New York Finger Lakes Riesling Tastings Part 2 we tried a few Rieslings and \u201cSemi Dry\u201d\u009d Rieslings.\u00c2\u00a0 From this grouping we recommended five wines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Anthony%20Road%202007%20Semi%20Dry%20Riesling.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Anthony Road 2007 Semi Dry Riesling\" height=\"173\" \/>Our winner was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4354\" title=\"2007 Anthony Road Riesling \">2007 Anthony Road \u201cSemi-Dry\u201d\u009d Riesling<\/a> for $16<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 We scored this wine 90 points and found it to be a terrific bargain.\u00c2\u00a0 On the palate, we thought this wine was light-bodied, very nicely balanced, and smooth.\u00c2\u00a0 It displayed off dry green apple flavors with a touch of honey.\u00c2\u00a0 There were notes of green grape flavors as well.\u00c2\u00a0 The finish was slightly sweet, and it lingers quite nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 This Riesling would be the perfect accompaniment for lobster bisque or chicken cordon bleu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Sheldrake%20Point%202007%20Riesling.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Sheldrake Point 2007 Riesling\" height=\"251\" \/>Next up was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4349\" title=\"2007 Sheldrake Point Vineyard Riesling \">2007 Sheldrake Point Riesling<\/a> for $16<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 We thought this was another nice bargain and scored it 89 points.\u00c2\u00a0 There were 743 cases made of this wine, so you should be able to find some.\u00c2\u00a0 It is light-bodied and very nicely balanced.\u00c2\u00a0 It displays very tasty green apple flavors and pleasant notes of minerality and honey.\u00c2\u00a0 In third place was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4338\" title=\"2007 Dr. Konstantin Frank Riesling \">2007 Dr. Konstantin Frank \u201cSemi Dry\u201d\u009d Riesling<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for $16<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine opens with an attractive aromatic ripe peach and orange peel-like bouquet.\u00c2\u00a0 It is light-bodied, balanced, and easy to drink.\u00c2\u00a0 The flavor profile was \u201coff dry\u201d\u009d with tasty apricot flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 We thought it would be a refreshing choice poolside this summer.\u00c2\u00a0 We scored this wine 88.7 points.<\/p>\n<p>The last two recommended Rieslings are from two producers that have scored well with the KWG Tasting Panel in the past.\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4376\" title=\"2007 Standing Stone Vineyards Riesling \">2007 Standing Stone Riesling<\/a> for $14<\/strong> scored 88 points.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine displayed off-dry lemon flavors with some tea mixed in as well.\u00c2\u00a0 We thought this wine was food-friendly and would be a nice complement to a turkey dinner.\u00c2\u00a0 The last wine we recommended from this group was the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4368\" title=\"2007 Atwater Estate Vineyards Riesling \">2007 Atwater Estate Riesling<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for $17<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 We scored this wine Very Good, and awarded it 87 points.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine was light-bodied, balanced, and displayed unique guava and light green pear-like flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 This wine would also pair nicely with turkey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Finger Lakes Wine Region is also well known for their delicious Dessert and Ice Wines<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Listed below\u00c2\u00a0are three wines we recently tried that are affordable, and we think you will absolutely love them.\u00c2\u00a0 We did!<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"71\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Standing%20Stone%202007%20Vidal%20Ice.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Standing Stone 2007 Vidal Ice\" height=\"400\" \/>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4385\" title=\"2007 Standing Stone Vineyards \">2007 Standing Stone \u201cVidal Ice\u201d\u009d<\/a> is outstanding<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 It is consistently one of my favorite wines from the Finger Lakes.\u00c2\u00a0 I savor every drop each year.\u00c2\u00a0 This year I shared it with the KWG Tasting Panel.\u00c2\u00a0 They loved it and scored it 91.1 points.\u00c2\u00a0 This 375 ml bottle costs only <strong>$20<\/strong> and is a heck of a bargain.\u00c2\u00a0 It is golden yellow in color, and opens with an attractive apricot and honey-like bouquet.\u00c2\u00a0 On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and creamy.\u00c2\u00a0 It displays sweet apricot flavors.\u00c2\u00a0 It&apos;s delicious!\u00c2\u00a0 There were 832 cases made, so you should be able to get some for your next dinner party.<\/p>\n<p>Two other options you should consider:\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=4389\" title=\"2007 Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard \">2007 Wiemer \u201cLate Harvest\u201d\u009d Riesling<\/a><\/strong> <strong>$23<\/strong> was very well received in one of our mini tasting panels.\u00c2\u00a0 We also recently re-tried the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine.php?wine=3568\" title=\"2007 Wagner Vineyards \">Wagner 2007 \u201cRiesling Ice Wine\u201d\u009d<\/a> $23<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of these dessert wines are terrific and are wonderful bargains.\u00c2\u00a0 The Weimer is in a full size bottle, and that is a lot of delicious wine for the money.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>The Wagner Riesling ice wine was one of the top dessert wines we tried at last year&apos;s Golden Nose awards.\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong> We think both are worth enjoying with your friends after dinner.<\/p>\n<p>We really enjoyed\u00c2\u00a0tasting the variety of\u00c2\u00a0Finger Lakes Rieslings from this terrific New York wine region.\u00c2\u00a0 If you would like to explore the Finger Lakes and experience these wonderful wines, you should check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fingerlakeswinecountry.com\/\"><strong>www.FingerLakesWineCountry.com<\/strong><\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the wineries are on both sides of <strong>Seneca Lake<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 There are also wineries of note on the western shore of <strong>Cayuga Lake<\/strong> and down at <strong>Keuka Lake<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 We previously wrote a blog post on some of the wineries we visited on our <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=13\" title=\"Exploring the Finger Lakes Wine Trail\">August 2007<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0trip to the Finger Lakes wine region<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_ads\/golden_nose_2009_160x160.gif\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"2009 Golden Nose Awards\" height=\"160\" \/>There are two exciting Finger Lakes wine events coming up\u00c2\u00a0this spring and summer.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Coming up in May is the 2009 Golden Nose Awards which is a wine tasting where the public can participate in the judging.\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0Each participant\u00c2\u00a0will be trained on the aspects of technical wine tasting.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a fun event and very educational.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.senecalakewine.com\/jc\/content\/view\/121\/149\/\" title=\"Golden Nose Awards\">The Golden Nose Awards<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0will be\u00c2\u00a0held\u00c2\u00a0in Corning, New York on May 29th and 30th, 2009<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Coming up this summer\u00c2\u00a0in the Finger Lakes is the ever popular <strong>Finger Lakes Wine Festival held at the Watkins Glen Race Track on July 17-19th, 2009.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Both events are a great excuse to visit the area, and experience the wines of the Finger Lakes.\u00c2\u00a0 Enjoy &#8211;
