{"id":69,"date":"2010-08-17T20:42:04","date_gmt":"2010-08-17T20:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=69"},"modified":"2010-08-17T20:42:04","modified_gmt":"2010-08-17T20:42:04","slug":"petite-sirah-tasting-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/blog\/?p=69","title":{"rendered":"Petite Sirah Tasting Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_ads\/PS-I-Love-You.jpg\" alt=\"PS I Love You\" align=\"right\" height=\"136\" width=\"160\" \/>Working with Jo Diaz from <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psiloveyou.org\/\" title=\"PS I Love You\">PS I Love You<\/a><\/strong>, we recently put together a blind tasting of <strong>15 Petite Sirahs<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I have highlighted below\u00c2\u00a0the winners from this blind tasting along with a few other gems that I have covered since my last report on this wonderful, yet under appreciated grape.<\/p>\n<p>We start with two of the gems that I covered outside of the big tasting. They are both top notch and worth seeking out if you are looking to try the pinnacle of what this grape can offer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Robert-Foley-2007-Petite-Sirah.gif\" alt=\"Robert-Foley-2007-Petite-Sirah\" align=\"left\" height=\"248\" width=\"180\" \/>The first offering is from <strong>Robert Foley<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 His <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Robert-Foley-2007-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Robert-Foley-2007-Petite-Sirah\">2007 Petite Sirah<\/a><\/strong> is <strong>Excellent<\/strong> and defines what can be done with this grape.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Bob is clearly one of the leading winemakers in this space.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>He has been doing a fantastic job with this grape for years.<span>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0This wine<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0is medium-bodied, very well balanced, and smooth as silk.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Its flavor profile is a very tasty black raspberry with notes of licorice.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>There were also some hints of blueberry and mild oak in the background to add to its complexity.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I found this Petite Sirah to have an incredible mouthfeel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We scored this wine <strong>94 points<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>However, it does cost <strong>$60<\/strong> per bottle, so you will need to make an investment.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 T<\/span>rust me, you will be rewarded.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>For passionate Petite Sirah fans, this wine is a must try.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Pair it with filet mignon\u00c2\u00a0and serve it to a friend who will equally appreciate the experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Aaron-2006-Petite-Sirah.gif\" alt=\"Aaron-2006-Petite-Sirah\" align=\"right\" height=\"400\" width=\"119\" \/>I met <strong>Aaron Jackson<\/strong> at the Boston Wine Expo this year and I had the pleasure\u00c2\u00a0of reviewing his signature <strong>Petite Sirah &#8220;Aaron&#8221;,<\/strong>as well as his entry level Petite Sirah labeled <strong>&#8220;Swell.&#8221;<\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong>Aaron<\/strong> is suburb (<strong>92 points)<\/strong> and the <strong>Swell <\/strong>is Very Good (<strong>89<\/strong>).<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Aaron makes Petite Sirah and only Petite Sirah. <span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Let me tell you, he knows what he is doing.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This kid is going to be a player in this space for years to come.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>You must check out his wines.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Aaron_2006_Petite_Sirah\" title=\"Aaron_2006_Petite_Sirah\">2006 \u201cAaron\u201d\u009d Petite Sirah<\/a><\/strong> for <strong>$28<\/strong>rocks and was clearly one of the top Petite Sirahs I covered this year.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is full-bodied, very nicely balanced, and quite smooth.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The flavor profile is a delicious blend of black raspberry and blackberry.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Its refined tannins are very nicely prolonged and make this gorgeous Petite Sirah another perfect offering to consider with a filet mignon.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It appears to be sold out at the winery and the only place I saw it available on the web is at <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lamaisongourmet.net\/2006_aaron_paso_robles_petite_sirah.html\" title=\"Le Maison Cheese Shop\">Le Maison Gourmet Cheese Shop<\/a><\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>So you better hurry. The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Aaron-2007-Swell-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Aaron-2007-Swell-Petite-Sirah\">2007 &#8220;Swell&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> was full-bodied, balanced, and quite juicy.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It displays very tasty ripe and concentrated black raspberry flavors with notes of black pepper throughout.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It is a fun and friendly Petite Sirah for <strong>$18<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It has 5% Zinfandel and 4% Syrah in the mix.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It would pair perfectly with a messy rack of ribs. This also appears to be sold out, so look for the 2008 release.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I am sure it will be Very Good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Chronic-Cellars-2008-Suite-Petite.gif\" alt=\"Chronic-Cellars-2008-Suite-Petite\" align=\"left\" height=\"135\" width=\"180\" \/>Now to the results of our <strong>big blind tasting<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The winner was from a winery racking up quite a few wins with us this year.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Chronic-Cellars-2008-Suite-Petite\" title=\"Chronic-Cellars-2008-Suite-Petite\">2008 Chronic Cellars &#8220;Suite Petite&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> for <strong>$30<\/strong> was very well received.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel awarded it <strong>91 points<\/strong>.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This almost pitch black colored wine is full-bodied, balanced, and quite dense.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We loved its juicy black currant and boysenberry flavors with notes of black pepper and chocolate covered black cherries in the aftertaste.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel suggested herb encrusted Colorado rack of lamb with this one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Miro-2007-Petite-Sirah.gif\" alt=\"Miro-2007-Petite-Sirah\" align=\"right\" height=\"147\" width=\"180\" \/>Next up is the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Miro-2007-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Miro-2007-Petite-Sirah\">Miro 2007 Petite Sirah<\/a><\/strong> for <strong>$23<\/strong>. <span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>This is the second vintage in a row that we have recommended this wine.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This vintage earned <strong>90 points<\/strong> from the panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>This offering is medium-bodied, balanced, very fruit forward and juicy.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I personally loved its very tasty blueberry flavors with hints of vanilla and a dash of black pepper.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel suggested pairing this one with a Steak Diane followed by a big hunk of German chocolate cake.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Also, while on the Miro bandwagon, if you come across the <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Miro-2006-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Miro-2006-Petite-Sirah\">2006 vintage<\/a><\/strong>, be sure to pick up a bottle.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I gave it <strong>91 points<\/strong> this winter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/images_wine\/Parducci-2006-True-Grit-Petite-Sirah.gif\" alt=\"Parducci-2006-True-Grit-Petite-Sirah\" align=\"left\" height=\"202\" width=\"180\" \/>Our third place finisher also received <strong>90 points<\/strong> from the panel.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Parducci-2006-True-Grit-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Parducci-2006-True-Grit-Petite-Sirah\">2006 Parducci &#8220;True Grit&#8221; Petite Sirah<\/a><\/strong> for <strong>$30<\/strong> lives up to its name.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied, balanced, and smooth with tasty black cherry flavors with hints of plum and black licorice and a dash of black pepper.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It&#8217;s the finish that shows its &#8220;True Grit.&#8221;<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Its big tannins are quite dry and linger for a while afterwards.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Grill up a ribeye and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the remaining <strong>Very Good Petite Sirahs<\/strong> that you should consider.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I will give you a teaser on each.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Four-Vines-2007-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Four-Vines-2007-Petite-Sirah\">Four Vines 2007 Petite Sirah &#8220;Paso Robles&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> (CA) <strong>$18<\/strong> (<strong>89<\/strong>)<br \/>\nPeople who like Four Vines Zins will like this Petite Sirah from Four Vines.<span> <\/span>It is very fruit forward and shows ripe black raspberry flavors with a hint of black pepper and black cherry.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Victor-Hugo-2007-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Victor-Hugo-2007-Petite-Sirah\"><strong>Victor Hugo 2007 Petite Sirah<\/strong> <\/a>(Paso Robles, CA) <strong>$22<\/strong> (<strong>89<\/strong>)<br \/>\nThis wine just missed the 90 point mark.<span> <\/span>It is full-bodied, balanced, and soft with very tasty ripe blackberry flavors with notes of black licorice.<span> <\/span>Its finish is quite dry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Vina-Robles-2007-Jardine-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Vina-Robles-2007-Jardine-Petite-Sirah\">Vina Robles 2007 Petite Sirah &#8220;Jardine&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>(Paso Robles, CA) <strong>$26<\/strong> (<strong>89<\/strong>)<br \/>\nSmooth with ripe plum flavors and a touch of black raspberry and coffee.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Panel suggested pairing this wine with a ribeye with saut\u00e9ed mushrooms to tame the tannins.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Kokomo-2007-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Kokomo-2007-Petite-Sirah\">Kokomo 2007 Petite Sirah<\/a><\/strong> (Dry Creek Valley, CA) <strong>$27<\/strong> (<strong>89<\/strong>)<br \/>\nThis Petite Sirah is a fruit bomb.<span> <\/span>It is fruit forward and displays juicy boysenberry and black raspberry flavors with a hint of black pepper and black currant.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Pedroncelli-2007-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Pedroncelli-2007-Petite-Sirah\">Pedroncelli 2007 Petite Sirah<\/a><\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0(Dry Creek Valley, CA) <strong>$15<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>(<strong>88<\/strong>)<br \/>\nThis good value Petite Sirah\u00c2\u00a0is medium-bodied, balanced, and soft.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We liked its gentle plum and oak flavors with a touch of chocolate mixed in.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Its tannins are sticky and lengthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kenswineguide.com\/wine_review\/Concannon-2007-Conservancy-Petite-Sirah\" title=\"Concannon-2007-Conservancy-Petite-Sirah\">Concannon 2007 Petite Sirah &#8220;Conservancy&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><span>\u00c2\u00a0(Livermore Valley, CA) <strong>$14<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>(<strong>87<\/strong>)<br \/>\nThis entry level offering is a nice affordable option and a good introduction to the grape.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The panel suggested pairing it with a big juicy burger or sausage with peppers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0I hope you get a chance to try some of these wines.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Petite Sirah is such a\u00c2\u00a0great grape!<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0It will be\u00c2\u00a0enjoyable for the cool fall nights coming up.\u00c2\u00a0 Happy Tasting.\u00c2\u00a0 Cheers &#8211;
