2005 Pio Cesare Italian (Piedmont) Red "Barolo"![]() Winery: Pio Cesare Vintage: 2005 Wine Name/Vineyard: "Barolo" Wine Category: Italian (Piedmont) Red Grape blend: 100% Nebbiolo Region: Barolo State or country: Italy Price: $61 Cases produced: 5,000 KWG Score: 92.6 (based on 6 reviews) Ken's Wine Rating: Very Good+ (93) Review date: September 6, 2010 Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Barolo opens with a fragrant and bold black raspberry and anise bouquet with hints of oak and spice. On the palate, this wine is full bodied and balanced. It shows a dry presence in the mouth, yet it shows harmonious acidity that keeps it alive on the palate. The flavor profile is a mild oak and black cherry blend with notes of anise on back palate. The finish is quite dry and its dusty and prominent tannins grow rapidly, then dissipate nicely after you swallow. This is a very substantial red wine. You should decant it for a while if you plan to drink it in the near term. It really smooths out with time and air. Serve it with a well marbled ribeye.
