Wine Review: This very dark garnet colored Syrah and Grenache based blend from Marietta Cellars opens with a lingonberry and black raspberry bouquet with hints of tobacco. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is delicate, silky smooth, seamless, and just glides through your mouth. The flavor profile is a gentle blackberry and mild soft black licorice blend with notes of stone dust, damson plum, and black pepper. I also detected hints of tobacco, Asian five spice, and oak. The finish is dry, and its persistent flavors, tingly acidity, and well-managed moderate tannins drift away nicely. We would pair this Syrah blend with a duck cassoulet. Enjoy – Ken & Jeoff

Winemaker Notes: The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA. It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California. This ancient, dry-farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. As a result of the vine age and minuscule yield, this wine is dark and intense. A heady mix of mulberry and lavender dominates the nose, with an edge of cinnamon stick. Broad, mouth-coating tannins are tethered to a core of smooth, sleek, powerful texture that is balanced by focused acid. Delicious with hearty fare now and built to age.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
