Wine Review: This midnight purple colored Arinarnoa from DAOU is their first release of this grape and wine. It opens with a shy blackberry bouquet with hints of cassis and black pepper. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is fresh, dense, concentrated, and layered. The flavor profile is an extracted blackberry and concentrated blueberry blend with notes of tobacco and stony minerality. We also detected hints of black tea, black pepper, and oak. The finish is dry, and its dusty tannins are nicely extended. We would pair this Arinarnoa with grilled hanger steak. Enjoy - Ken & Stuart

Winemaker Notes: Introducing the inaugural vintage of our estate grown Arinarnoa, a rare yet promising Bordeaux variety planted by Chief Winemaker Daniel Daou. Arinarnoa is an exciting grape created in 1956 as a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat. Our inaugural release of Arinarnoa announces itself with dark, concentrated hues in the glass. The nose presents fruit-forward aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, boysenberry, and blueberry pie with notes of cedar, tobacco, vanilla, fig, leather and mint leaf. Rounded textures flood the palate with blueberry, cranberry, raspberry, plum and dark chocolate. Accents of bay leaf, espresso, baking spices and cigar box join flashy tannins and fresh acidity on a broad, voluminous finish.

A Visit To Virginia Wine Country – Fall 2026

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. Winemaker Interview Series – Jeff Gaffner of Saxon Brown – May 2026

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage. We wrapped up the tasting with a 2023 Zinfandel.
