Wine Review: This slightly hazy and dark ruby colored Pinot Noir opens with a pomegranate and black plum bouquet with hints of cinnamon and red licorice. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium plum acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, very smooth, and savory. The favorite profile is a tasty black plum and green tea blend with notes of stone dust, dark chocolate, and oak. I also detected hints of black cherry, black pepper, and marionberry. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate tannins are nicely extended. This Pinot would pair well with a duck breast with plum sauce. Cheers - Ken

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
