Wine Review: This clear and white gold colored Chardonnay from J. Lohr opens with a ginger ale and poached pear bouquet with hints of pineapple, banana, and a touch of oak. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, fresh, and bright. The flavor profile is Bartlet pear and pineapple blend with notes of almond and oolong tea. We also detected hints of gentle oak, nectarine, and honey. The finish is dry, and its flavors and acidity drift away nicely. We would pair this Chard with a chicken and wild mushroom ravioli with a light cream sauce. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: The 2024 Arroyo Vista Chardonnay exhibits intriguing aromas of daffodil, Meyer lemon, ripe apple, and apricot. The rich palate texture is derived from the use of classic Burgundian techniques, such as primary and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and weekly stirring of the lees during aging. The texture is balanced, with flavors of pear, lemon cream, a chalky minerality, and baking spices with a long, sweet oak finish. Will prove a wonderful pairing with butternut squash soup, mussels in lemon-wine sauce, or with roasted chicken with mushrooms.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
