Wine Review: This deep purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Carmen opens with a mild black cherry and leather bouquet with hints of mild dark chocolate, baking spice, and black olive. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, very smooth, and a little fresh. The flavor profile is a blackberry and cocoa blend with notes of stone dust and mulberry. We also detected hints of oak, cherry, licorice. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate tannins linger and for a while. We would pair this versatile Cab with beef tips with mushroom gravy or with a beef brisket sandwich. A Visit To Virginia Wine Country – Fall 2026

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. Winemaker Interview Series – Jeff Gaffner of Saxon Brown – May 2026

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
