Wine Review: This very dark garnet colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Marietta Cellars opens with a black currant and black plum bouquet with hints of lavender sachets. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, very smooth, and fruit forward. The flavor profile is a black currant and blackberry blend with notes of stone dust and juicy black plum. I also detected hints of cedar, black pepper, and a touch of olive. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and well-managed refined dusty tannins are nicely sustained. I would enjoy this Cabernet Sauvignon in the near term and serve with a filet mignon at your favorite steak restaurant. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: The 2022 Game Trail Cabernet is a svelte, stylish powerhouse. This wine feels like salty sea spray dripping off gnarled cedar boughs: wild and fresh with an innate sense of gravity and grace. A finely textured mouth with plenty of slate and chew brims with kalamata, sage, and peppercorn. Try this with braised greens and Korean short ribs.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
