Wine Review: This opaque and deep purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Mauritson opens with a black cherry and saddle leather bouquet with hints of violet, black licorice, and stone dust. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, dense, structured, and has nice tension. The flavor profile is a black currant and black licorice blend with notes of graphite and black cherry. We also detected hints of oak, black tea, and blackberry. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and well-managed moderate grippy tannins are nicely sustained. We would pair this Cab with grilled hanger steak or with a New York strip steak. The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. Winemaker Interview Series - Mike Kobler of Kobler Estate Winery – July 2026

On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Mike Kobler. Mike is the winemaker at Kobler Estate Winery. During the interview, we covered two 2024 rosé wines, one made from Pinot Noir and one made from Syrah. We also covered a 2023 and a 2024 Viognier from the Russian River Valley. Those discussions were followed by a focus on a 2023 and a 2024 Chardonnay from the Bacigalupi Vineyards. We wrapped up the interview with a 2022 Syrah and a 2023 "Reserve" Syrah.
