Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Touriga Nacional from St. Amant opens with a violet and black plum bouquet with hints of mint, pecan, molasses, and nutmeg. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is round, bright, and lively. The flavor profile is a mild black currant and caraway seed blend with notes of gentle walnut and sage. We also detected hints of faint rum, black plum, and stone dust. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and fine dusty tannins are nicely extended. We would pair this Touriga Nacional with a grilled hanger steak with a rum butter sauce. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: My dad fell in love with Portuguese ports in the 1970's and planted Touriga Nacional at our Amador County ranch in 1980. The vines have thrived, producing exotic table wines with distinctive floral notes, fresh berries, spice, and great complexity. The 2023 vintage features blackberry, violets, and spice. It is drinking well now but should age for at least 10 years.

Winemaker Interview Series – Brian Pruett – Dry Creek Vineyard – Feb 2026

On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, we interviewed Brian Pruett. Brian is the winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard. We covered eight wines during the visit. We started with Chenin Blanc and a single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, both from the 2024 vintage. Then we tried three single-vineyard and one historic-field-blend Zinfandel from the 2022 vintage. As you will recall, we really liked 2022 as a Zinfandel vintage. Finally, we wrapped up with their 2021 Red Blend and their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2022 vintage. It was a great tasting and a lot of fun. In this post, you can learn what we learned about Brian and the history of the winery and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines. Then we tried two AVA focused Pinot Noir from 2023 and followed that up with two single vineyard 2023 Pinot Noirs. We concluded the tasting with a mini-vertical of 2022 and 2023 vintage Pinots from Volnay and Beaune. It was a terrific and very interesting portfolio tasting.
