Wine Review: This slightly opaque and medium ruby colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Carmen opens with a blackberry and black olive and bouquet with hints of green pepper and leather. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is fresh and round with nice tension. The flavor profile is a blackberry and green olive blend with notes of black currant, black tea, and tobacco. We also detected hints of red licorice and oak. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and mild dusty tannins fade away nicely. We would pair this Cab with a grilled blue cheese angus burger. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: Our Carmen Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 is a deep and intense ruby-red in color. The nose presents aromas of black currants, blackberries, violets and spice with smooth, elegant cedar notes. The palate is rich and generous yet fresh and vibrant at the same time. The wine has abundant fruit and firm tannins that lend structure and depth.

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
