Wine Review: This slightly hazy and dark ruby colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Memento Mori opens with a pencil lead and cassis bouquet with hints of oolong tea and black plum. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, smooth and seamless. The flavor profile is a cassis and graphite blend with notes of black plum and cedar. We also detected hints of dark chocolate nibs. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity and very dusty tannins are very lengthy. We would decant this wine in the near term for a very long time. Then we would pair it with a well-marbled ribeye. Winemaker Notes: Sourced from six single-vineyard sites throughout Napa Valley, intense aromas of black cherry, black currant, and plum meld with baking spice, mocha, and a curl of licorice, unfurling into a plush palate of cassis and dark stone fruit. Additional layers of dried herb and subtle minerality continue to evolve with time in the glass, framed by ultra fine, fleecy tannins and a bright, well-balanced acidity that capture the richness of the vintage. Supple and inviting, the long finish brings this beautifully layered wine full circle. Generous enough to enjoy now, structured enough to reward patience for decades to come.

Winemaker Interview Series – Jeff Gaffner of Saxon Brown – May 2026

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
