Wine Review: This deep garnet colored Brunello di Montalcino from Frescobaldi opens with a dark cherry and pipe tobacco bouquet with hints of cedar. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round and savory. The flavor profile is a tart red cherry and black coffee blend with notes of tobacco and malted chocolate. I also detected hints of strawberry and cedar. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and mild tannins linger nicely. I would pair this Brunello di Montalcino with eggplant parmigiana. Enjoy – Ken

Winemaker Notes: CastelGiocondo 2021 has a bright, deep ruby red color. The bouquet is intense and varied, with hints of elegant floral notes of sweet violet and dog rose and notes of wild berries. Clear spicy hints emerge later, reminiscent of star anise and black and white pepper. The tertiary aromas that pervade the nose are wonderful, evoking tea leaves, tobacco leaves, and coffee beans. The finish is slightly balsamic with hints of licorice. Fresh, round, and tannic on the palate, with tannins that are never aggressive but we l-matured and caressing. The finish is very long and extremely persistent.

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage. We wrapped up the tasting with a 2023 Zinfandel.
