Wine Review: This clear and medium garnet colored Pinot Noir from Dutton Goldfield opens with a black cherry and cola bouquet with hints of wet stone, blueberry, and cocoa powder. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, smooth, seamless, and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is a stone dust and black plum blend with notes of mild tobacco, orange zest, and red raspberry tea. We also detected hints of cedar, cola, black licorice, and black pepper. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and mild dusty tannins drift away nicely. We would pair this Pinot Noir with beef bourguignon or with Mike’s oxtail stew. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: This cool site is once again among our last picked, allowing for long hang time that builds depth without sacrificing edge. The nose is more untamed in this vintage, opening with dried lilac and boysenberry layered over cedar and woodsy, feral notes. Baking spices weave through the aromatics, giving the wine a savory, almost forest-floor intrigue. On the palate, dark berry fruit remains at the core, but it’s framed by structure rather than sweetness. Cedar, spice, and earthy tones add tension and complexity, with fine-grained tannins carrying the wine through a long, resonant finish. This is a more serious, expressive Docker Hill Pinot Noir, rewarding slow sipping and pairing beautifully with dishes that lean savory and rustic—think roast meats, mushrooms, or aged cheeses that can stand up to its wild side.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
