Wine Review: This clear and red colored Pinot Noir from Dutton Goldfield opens with a red plum and terra cotta bouquet with hints of teaberry gum, cherry, iris, and tobacco. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, and savory. The flavor profile is a dried strawberry and red plum blend with notes of clove and Dr. Pepper. We also detected hints of cedar, stony minerality, tobacco and red beet. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and managed mild tannins drift away nicely. We would pair this Pinot Noir with a mushroom risotto, or with a turkey dinner with sausage stuffing. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: This vintage is a beautifully nuanced expression of this coastal Pinot Noir that we personally farm, opening with perfumed notes of lavender, wild raspberry, and dried strawberry. Hints of cola and dark tea leaf lend depth and intrigue, while the palate follows with a seamless blend of brambly fruit, subtle spice, and earthy undertones. The wine’s elegant structure and savory complexity make it a versatile and compelling partner at the table. For pairings, try it with a lavender honey and brie crostini finished with cracked black pepper for an elevated appetizer, or a roasted beet and strawberry salad with hazelnuts and aged goat cheese for a vibrant contrast.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
