Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Pinot Noir blend from Appassionata opens with an attractive ripe black cherry and teaberry blend bouquet with hints of cinnamon and red licorice. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, round and savory. The flavor profile is a cedar influenced black cherry and dried strawberry blend with notes of teaberry gum and cinnamon tea. I also detected hints of spiced black plum and a touch of licorice. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and gentle tannins drift away nicely. I would pair this Pinot Noir with duck confit. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: Taking its name from a Beethoven piano sonata, Appassionata Vineyards began as a passion project for German winemaker Ernst Loosen. Allegro: the musical pace of a brisk walk. This cuvée is a selection of barrels that show a precocious liveliness and expressivity that will drink well as a youthful wine but is built for aging. It is released three years after the vintage. The 2021 is a finely textured Pinot Noir, offering energy, balance, and the promise of graceful evolution. The 2021 vintage offers a finely woven texture with dark-toned fruit, lifted aromatics, and a lively, juicy finish. The 2021 vintage shows both youthful brilliance and the promise of graceful evolution in the cellar.

Winemaker Interview Series – Brian Pruett – Dry Creek Vineyard – Feb 2026

On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, we interviewed Brian Pruett. Brian is the winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard. We covered eight wines during the visit. We started with Chenin Blanc and a single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, both from the 2024 vintage. Then we tried three single-vineyard and one historic-field-blend Zinfandel from the 2022 vintage. As you will recall, we really liked 2022 as a Zinfandel vintage. Finally, we wrapped up with their 2021 Red Blend and their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2022 vintage. It was a great tasting and a lot of fun. In this post, you can learn what we learned about Brian and the history of the winery and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
