Wine Review: This almost clear colored Spätlese level Riesling from Dr. Loosen opens with a light lemon iced tea bouquet with hints of Anjou pear, tangerine, and mango. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, and airy. The flavor profile is a lemon and ginger blend with notes of green tea, peach, white pepper. We also detected hints of lime zest and honey crisp apple. The finish is pleasantly sweet, and its flavors and acidity fade away nicely. We would drink this delicate Riesling on its own as dessert. With food try it with Pam’s macarons or with my pear and Great Hill Blue Cheese salad. Enjoy – KWGTP
Winemaker Notes: A bracing and forceful Riesling from fully ripe grapes grown in the iron-rich, red slate soil of the "little staircase" vineyard. This vineyard is so steep that, long ago, stone steps ("Treppchen") were built into the hillside to help workers reach the vines. The iron-infused, red slate soil produces wines that are muscular and complex, with an intense mineral finish. The Spätlese designation means that the grapes get an extra week or two of hang time, which helps them develop higher ripeness and deeper flavors. The 2023 Treppchen Spätlese is pure and delicious, with a concentrated core of red fruits.
