Wine Review: This hazy and deep purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Mauritson opens with a black currant and loam, bouquet with hints of blackberry, tobacco, Oreo cookie, and a touch of mint. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, smooth, seamless, and fresh. The flavor profile is a black currant and cinnamon blend with notes of tobacco and graphite. We also detected hints of black tea, sage, black olive, and a touch of black cherry. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and well-managed dusty tannins are nicely sustained. We would pair this Cab with porterhouse steak. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: Our 2023 Mauritson "Sonoma County" Cabernet is a remarkable example of the art of blending to capture both a sense of place and time. It opens with a seductive aromatic profile of dark ripe plum, candied violets, mineral and a dusting of shaved vanilla bean pod, espresso grounds, earthen char, and gentle notes of dried herb waft from the glass. A beautiful freshness gives lift to the mid-palate while the lingering sweet dark fruit provides depth and concentration. Firm but graceful tannins linger on the palate. An incredibly rich Cabernet that will age exquisitely for the next 10-plus years.

Recently, our coverage has expanded beyond just the Governor’s Cup winners. Ken has been so impressed with Virginia wines that Theresa and he visited some wineries in the Charlottesville region in October of 2024. We highly recommend that you check out the six Virginia wineries in this post. We will start from the south near Charlottesville in the Monticello AVA and make our way north. Read This Blog Post
