Wine Review: This clear and dark ruby colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Risk opens with a black currant and shoe leather bouquet with hints of graphite and blackberry. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The flavor profile is a cedar influenced black currant with notes of black pepper and star anise. We also detected hints of Dr. Pepper and mulberry. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and fine tannins linger and last for quite some time. We would pair this Cabernet Sauvignon with a filet with hollandaise sauce. Enjoy - Ken & Mark

Winemaker Notes: Our Oakville, Napa Valley wine is handpicked from the vines. We ferment in small lots and then age in New French oak barrels for 18 months. This wine has concentrated layers of black fruit, coffee, and dried herbs. The polished tannin will make this a great wine to cellar for the next decade.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
