Wine Review: This clear and deep yellow colored Chardonnay from Chappellet opens with a mild oak and pineapple bouquet with hints of lemon verbena. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, round, and bright with rich flavors. Those rich flavors are a blend of pineapple and pear with notes of oak and lemon tea. I also detected hints of toasted almond. The finish is dry, and its flavors and acidity are very nicely extended. I would pair this Chardonnay with crab bisque or hot crab dip. Enjoy - Ken & Mark

Winemaker Notes: Vibrant, complex, and impeccably polished, this wine draws you in with aromas of pineapple, orange zest, lemon custard and tropical flowers, as well as rich notes of brioche, crème fraiche, vanilla bean, nutmeg, and clove. On the palate it is lush and creamy, with a layered mouthfeel and flavors of ripe citrus, apricot, crème brûlée and French oak-inspired barrel spice, with a beam of bright acidity carrying the flavors to a long, luxurious finish.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
