Wine Review: This deep purple colored Syrah from Lasseter opens with a birch beer and cedar bouquet with hints of lavender and Play-Doh. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, super smooth, fresh, and complex. The flavor profile is a very tasty Australian soft black licorice, dark chocolate, and blackberry blend with notes of blueberry and RC Cola. We also detected hints of black pepper, Slim Jim, cedar, and tobacco. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and refined dusty tannins stick around for quite some time. Drink it on its own! However, with food we would pair this Syrah with a Montreal-rubbed New York strip steak. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: This cellar-worthy beauty is deep black violet in color and offers intriguing aromas of blueberry and dark cocoa. The palate is dense and rich, with hints of blue fruit just beginning to emerge, wrapped in layers of umami, leather, and oolong tea. Big fine tannins and spice notes grace a lingering finish.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
