Review: The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island is an elegant historical mansion that has been turned into a small luxurious hotel. The hotel is located at the start of Newport’s world famous Cliff Walk The Chanler Cliff Walk.gifwhich is a 3.5 mile National Recreation Trail meandering along the eastern shore of Newport, RI with great views of the Newport mansions and of course, the ocean. The Chanler has beautiful grounds with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the perfect location for a romantic getaway or a top notch function.

The Chanler has twenty uniquely designed spacious rooms which are very tastefully decorated. Because The Chanler is located high above the cliffs, many of the rooms offer gorgeous ocean views. Wireless internet access is complimentary throughout the hotel which is smoke free. The hotel also offers 24 hour front desk assistance and room service. Every room features luxurious amenities including heated marble or tile floors. We loved the heated tile floor in the bathroom. It felt luxurious. We also loved the town car service. It was convenient and classy.

The Chanler dining room.gif The Chanler provides its guests with a complimentary daily newspaper and a continental breakfast. The breakfast is served in the beautiful dining room or on the terrace, weather permitting. The complimentary breakfast includes fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee, tea, home made vanilla yogurt, pastries, and fresh seasonal fruit. We loved the strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, pineapples, and blueberries. The delicious pastry assortment includes orange marmalade, blueberry marmalade, croissants and bread pudding muffins which were delicious. Ken said the blueberry marmalade was the best he had ever had and he loved it on his croissant. In addition to the continental breakfast, there are other breakfast options as well. On day two, Ken enjoyed scrambled eggs, bacon, and Lyonnaise potatoes.

We enjoyed our stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk while we were in town for the annual Newport Wine and Food Festival. The hotel is located very near the festival’s events which were held at the Newport mansions–about a five minute drive from The Chanler.

Because we had other dinner commitments related to the festival, we did not get the opportunity to dine at the nationally acclaimed Spiced Pear Restaurant located at The Chanler.

The Chanler terrace.gif We did order the classic three cheese pizza ($14) off the veranda menu which included basil-roasted garlic tomato sauce, parmesan, ricotta salata, and mozzarella di bufala. It was one of the best pizzas we have ever tasted. I can only imagine how delicious dinner at The Spiced Pear would taste. While we were at the Newport Wine and Food Festival, the chef from the Spiced Pear was serving samples of one of his delicious soups. We loved the soup. In addition to the beautiful Spiced Pear restaurant, the bar at The Chanler is charming. It’s the perfect place for a relaxing glass of wine.

We also heard that staying at The Chandler over the holidays is a special treat. The Newport Mansions are beautifully decorated for the holidays and are a sight to see.

The Chanler is a lovely spot for weddings. While we were staying at the hotel, there was a beautiful outdoor wedding on the lovely grounds of The Chanler overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The Chanler is only a 90 minute drive from Boston and only a three hour drive from New York City. It’s a great place for wine lovers to stay–especially when you are in town for the annual Newport Wine and Food Festival. The Chanler has one room that is handicap accessible. We recommend The Chanler as a great destination for wine lovers.

Cheers,
Theresa & Ken
