Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Syrah from South Africa is very good. It opens with saddle leather and cedar bouquet with hints of blackberry. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with notes of medium acidity. It has a soft and round mouthfeel. The flavor profile is a black licorice and oak blend with notes of blackberry and black olive. I also detected hints of black pepper and allspice. The finish is dry, and its medium tannins and flavors are nicely prolonged. While the current vintage is 2018, this late release 2016 is showing very well right now. I would pair this wine with Brazilian Picanha steak. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: The complex nose offers a brooding compote of dark berry fruit, black olives, perfume, and spice. The blackberries, young berries, brambles, and violets of the nose follow through onto a full, round palate with intense notes of allspice, licorice, and black pepper. The mid-palate is concentrated and focused, yet austere and lithe at the same time. The wine is savory, almost Rhône-like in style with integrated acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins to balance, offering structure and great age ability. The spicy finish endures with hints of cloves, nutmeg and cardamom and subtle garrigue nuances.
