Wine Review: We recently conducted a retrospective tasting of older very high-end Bordeaux offerings. This was our second favorite of the five first growths that we tried. This wine was slightly cloudy and dark ruby colored. It opens with a new leather and cassis bouquet with hints of cedar and violets. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is nicely balanced, smooth, seamless, and a little dense. The flavor profile is spiced black plum and red licorice blend with notes of mild graphite and oolong tea. I also detected some hints of cedar in the mix. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate tannins drift away nicely. I would pair this terrific offering from Chateau Margaux with a New York strip steak. Enjoy – Ken (Tasted on 8/23/25)
Winemaker Notes: 2009 is perhaps the greatest young Château Margaux we have tasted over the last 30 years. The Cabernet (87% of the blend) has no equivalent other than 2005, but it is more tender. The only two batches of Merlot that were kept (9%) have no equivalent at all. As for the Cabernet Franc (2%) and the Petit Verdot (2%), they performed at their highest levels. The 2009 Château Margaux is an unparalleled vintage in its tannic power and fullness (reminding us of 2005) and its softness (reminiscent of 1990). And since its alcoholic degree is barely over 13, its finish remains fresh, flavorsome and of astonishing length.
