Wine Review: This lightly oaked Sauvignon Blanc from the Alexander Valley is a pale straw color, with aromas of lemon pith, grapefruit, salty sea breeze, vanilla crème, and a touch of wet slate. The palate has a velvety and round mouthfeel, medium body, medium-plus acidity, and a rich and elegant style. I found flavors of passionfruit, lemon drop, vanilla custard, mild oak and white pepper with notes of saline, gooseberry, and honeydew. The finish is bright and very long. Serve slightly chilled with chicken carbonara. – Mark

Winemaker Notes: Bursting with generous ripe fruit and orange blossom aromatics, our fume-style Alexander Valley Sauvignon Blanc offers juicy flavors of kiwi fruit, yellow peach, and passionfruit wrapped in bright refreshing acidity. A full and soft midpalate and notes of vanilla panna cotta are the outcome of aging sur lie in 400-liter French oak barrels. The wine finishes with subtle sweet almond and mineral complexity. Try this with smoked salmon, chicken picatta, or a lemon mascarpone pasta dish.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
