Wine Review: This deep midnight purple colored Carménère from Vina Carmen in Chile opens with a black olive and blueberry bouquet with hints of tar and old leather. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is bright and zesty while also being round and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is a blackberry and black pepper blend with notes of black licorice and black olive. I also detected hints of black plum, fig, tobacco, and oolong tea. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate earthy tannins linger and last for a while. I would pair this rustic styled Carménère with slow cooked beef brisket or burnt ends. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: Delanz Apalta is an elegant and fresh wine, with vibrant tannins that seek to highlight its fruitiness and freshness without leaving aside the spicy character of the Carmenere. This wine achieves a perfect balance between delicacy and juiciness, while its tannins provide texture that enhances the complexity of this blend.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
