Wine Review: This hazy and deep ruby colored Zinfandel from VGS opens with a mulberry, black olive, and chocolate bouquet with hints of coconut, bay leaf, and Twizzler. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, smooth, clean, and slightly zesty. The flavor profile is a black cherry and bay leaf blend with notes of spiced red plum, tobacco, and black pepper. We also detected hints of black tea, cedar, and orange zest. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and its well-managed fine tannins drift away nicely. We would pair this Zinfandel with a grilled hanger steak or with beef bulgogi (Korean barbecue beef. The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years.
