Wine Review: This opaque and deep purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Patent opens with a black coffee and blackberry bouquet with hints of leather, cherry compote, and Australian soft black licorice. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is well-balanced, super smooth, slightly viscous, layered, and shows nice density. The flavor profile is a black currant and extracted blackberry blend with notes of Australian soft black licorice, graphite, and black cherry. We also detected hints of menthol, tobacco, Madagascar vanilla, and a touch of cedar. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity and moderate dusty tannins stick around for a while. We would pair this impressive Cabernet Sauvignon with Roy’s rib roast or with a Brazilian grilled picanha steak. Enjoy - Ken and Mark

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. Winemaker Interview Series – Jeff Gaffner of Saxon Brown – May 2026

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage. We wrapped up the tasting with a 2023 Zinfandel.
