Wine Review: This slightly opaque and dark garnet colored Malbec based blend from Brasfield opens with a cassis and dark chocolate bouquet with hints of mulberry and flinty minerality. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, very smooth, and approachable. The flavor profile is a graphite and cassis blend with notes of plum and black olive. I also detected hints of black tea and oak. The finish is dry, and its managed dusty tannins stick around for quite some time. I would pair this red blend with slow cooked beef brisket. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: Full flavored and firmly tannic, our 2021 Eruption Red Blend combines delicious, concentrated aromas of blackberry and blueberry with accents of dried violet and oak spice. This wine shows the intensity, volume, and palette-coating mouthfeel we have come to expect of our fruit from Volcano Ridge. A juicy and well-balanced finish rounds out each sip.

Winemaker Interview Series – Cole Ballentine of William Cole – Jan 2026

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, we interviewed Cole Ballentine once again. Cole is the co-winemaker, with his father William Ballentine Jr., at William Cole Winery. We first interviewed Cole when we covered his super-premium Predecessor Estate wines in April of 2025. This time around, we covered six wines from the William Cole winery. We started with a 2023 Chardonnay. Then we tried a 2022 red blend. From there, we covered four Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Those Cabs were from the following vintages: 2018, 2022, 2016, and 2009. It was a terrific portfolio tasting. In this post, you can learn what is new with Cole, learn about the William Cole Winery, and read our reviews of all of these impressive wines.
