Wine Review: This opaque and medium purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon based blend from Chateau d'Armailhac in Pauillac is excellent. It opens with a cedar and cassis bouquet while also showing some earthy aromas. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, super smooth, and polished. The flavor profile is a graphite and cassis blend with notes of cedar and tobacco. We also detected hints of red plum. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and refined mild tannins are nicely sustained. We would pair this Cab blend with a filet mignon. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: Château d’Armailhac 2022 is the epitome of contained power. Showing all the density of the vintage offset by great freshness and remarkable length, it offers a framework of black fruit flavors mingled with chocolate, pepper, and spice notes as well as a floral touch attributable to the estate’s exceptional Cabernet Franc grapes, which express all their elegance in this vintage. Fleshy and rich, its creamy texture is underpinned by well-rounded and perfectly constructed tannins, highlighting the rich and delicate array of flavors. The finish lingers long on beautifully fresh notes of blackcurrant and licorice. Serve with meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
