Wine Review: This clear and pale straw-colored Chardonnay from Carmen opens with a fresh Anjou pear and pineapple bouquet with hints of lemon pith, lily, and white peach. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, crisp and fresh. The flavor profile is an Anjou pear and lemon blend with notes of lime and white peach. We also detected hints of saline, pineapple, white pepper, and a touch oak. The finish is dry, and its flavors and acidity drift away nicely. We would pair this Chard with crispy fish tacos or with fried coconut shrimp. Enjoy - KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: This pale-yellow Chardonnay has distinctive citrus notes on the nose, aromas of peaches and green apple, with an elegant influence of oak. The palate is of a delicate structure, persistent and balanced, sustained by its characteristic minerality.

The fall is a perfect time to plan a visit to Virginia Wine country. Ken and the KWG Tasting Panel have been covering the winning wines from the Virginia Governor’s Cup for years. Winemaker Interview Series – Jeff Gaffner of Saxon Brown – May 2026

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gaffner again. Jeff is the winemaker and owner of Saxon Brown Wines. During the interview, we covered four single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnays, three Pinot Noirs, a cuvee, and two single-vineyard offerings, also from the 2023 vintage.
