On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, we had the opportunity to interview Melissa Stackhouse again. Melissa is the winemaker for Dutton Goldfield. We covered one 2022 Chardonnay wines and seven 2022 single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines during the interview. We last interviewed Melissa and Dan Goldfield in April 2024 when we covered the previous vintages of many of these wines. You can read about those wines in this post. In the current interview, Melissa shared some updates since our last chat, so check out what we learned.
Before we get to the wines, I thought I would share some tidbits that Melissa shared in the interview.
- Dan Goldfield is now Winemaker Emeritus
- He generally is available if we want him for something.
- We might have him come back to call the pick at Docker.
- He is doing some traveling now and more bike riding.
- 2022 was the earliest vintage ever for them.
- On August 12th the first fruit was harvested.
- Same vineyard in 2023 was harvested on September 12th – a whole month later.
- There was a major rain event in 2023. The usually later vintage sites (Devil’s Gulch, 5 Wells, Angel Camp and Docker) all had to be picked and brought in before the rain.
- Azaya Vineyard will be back and bottled in 2023.
- Dutton Ranch – Bodega Vineyard will have its first release in 2024.
- 2023 will be the last year for Angel Camp Vineyard.
- Deviate is a blend of Putnam Vineyard (Redwood Valley) and the Dutton’s Jentoft Vineyard in the Russian River Valley.
- Devil’s Gulch Vineyard is the only vineyard that is netted.
- Fox Den Vineyard is a late harvest vineyard.
- It was first planted in 2000. Its first wine was 2004. It produces very small berries.
- McDougal Vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview has the 667 clone planted. There are bay (laurel) trees near the vineyard.
- Snow Vineyard in Green Valley was recently purchased. It has 943 and Calera clones planted.
