Winemaker Interview Series – Melissa Stackhouse of Dutton Goldfield – April 2026

Melissa Stackhouse Dutton Goldfield WinemakerOn Wednesday, April 1, 2026, we interviewed Melissa Stackhouse once again. Melissa is the Winemaker at Dutton Goldfield. During the interview, we covered the winery’s 2025 vintage Pinot Blanc and one of their single-vineyard 2023 Chardonnay wines. Then we covered seven single-vineyard Pinot Noir offerings from the 2023 vintage. We always enjoy our visits with Melissa. As you might expect, it was another great tasting! In this post, Melissa shared updates since our last chat. You can also read our reviews of all of these terrific new Dutton Goldfield wines.

Before we get to the wines, I thought I would share some tidbits that Melissa shared in the interview.

  • What is new at the winery?
    • The biggest change is that as of April 16, 2026, the Dutton-Goldfield Winery announced it had entered into a significant new chapter in its history. Sonoma County farmer Steve Dutton and his wife, Karissa Kruse (Dutton) have assumed full ownership of the acclaimed Russian River Valley winery. (This was hinted to us that it was happening)
    • We also learned that Karissa is also the chief executive officer of Sonoma County Winegrowers.
    • As part of this next phase, Dutton-Goldfield will deepen its commitment to sourcing exclusively from Sonoma County vineyards.
    • Specifically, they will increasingly focus its wine portfolio based upon fruit from the historic Dutton Ranch.
      • One of the new Dutton Ranch focused single vineyard Pinot Noir’s is going to come from their Bodega Vineyard. The first release for this wine is still targeted for release in 2024. We are looking forward to covering it next year.
    • Dutton Goldfield Hospitality ExperienceMoving forward, they are also planning to expand their hospitality offerings at the winery. The new focus will include the following:
      • Approachable and more relaxed welcoming experiences.
      • Expanded happy hour programming.
      • Immersive offerings that bring guests closer to the vineyards, the farming story, and the people behind the wines.
    • What are the other Dutton Ranch vineyard wines that we covered this year?
      • Walker Hill Chardonnay, Snow Vineyard Pinot Noir, Emerald Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir and Shop Block Pinot Blanc all are sourced from Dutton Ranch vineyards.
      • Deviate is partially Dutton Ranch fruit. A portion of the fruit comes from the Dutton-Jentoft Vineyard in the Russian River Valley and the remaining % of the blend comes from the Putnam Vineyard in the Redwood Valley. The wine is called Deviate because it deviates from their single vineyard tradition!
    • Where exactly are all the vineyards you source from?
    • Finally, what is your favorite wines from the 2023 vintage? As noted on the staff picks page. Melissa prefers the 2023 5 Wells Pinot Noir.
      • She feels it captures what she values most in Pinot: lift, precision, and quiet complexity. She describes its aromas of lilac, forest floor, and baking spice that lead into a bright, graceful palate layered with cranberry and Bing cherry. It’s thoughtful without being heavy-handed, and endlessly drinkable.
